'Feeling lucky' is Google doodle shortcut

Google

Google doodle of Hideyo Noguchi's 135th Birthday - (Japan) on Nov.9

By Athima Chansanchai

Seems like every other day, there's a new Google doodle, so if you haven't caught all of them, no need to worry?? there's a shortcut to those images for your viewing pleasure.

Gawker nightowl Matt Cherette discovered the shortcut and posted it on Twitter: "1) Go to Google. 2) Click 'I'm Feeling Lucky' without typing anything. 3) See every single Google Doodle ever created." (Thanks, Gizmodo, for the heads up.)

Sure enough, doing exactly that brings up the same Google doodles page we've sent people to before. There, you can see how awfully busy those doodlers really are, with logo variations all over the world.?

While there are a few global doodles???Louis Daguerre's 224th Birthday,?Marie Curie's 144th Birthday, Art Clokey's 90th Birthday?and?Mary Blair's 100th Birthday this fall, for instance?? most are specific to people and things significant to individual countries.?

Independence days, reunification days, election days?? these are just some of the milestones doodlers pick up. Here are some images we found captivating, that we wouldn't have seen here in the U.S.:

Google

Italo Calvino's 88th Birthday - (Italy) on Oct.15

Google

Day of the Dead - (Mexico) Google doodle on Nov.2

Google

Uganda Independence Day Google doodle on Oct.9

The ones we've seen in this country have been eye catching too, at the very least. Google has a decent track record when it comes to animating the doodles to the interactive level:?the?dancing Martha Graham-inspired piece, the?animated interpretation of John Lennon's "Imagine," and the?playable/recordable Les Paul guitar.?

Petroleum-eating mushrooms

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) ? Take a Petri dish containing crude petroleum and it will release a strong odor distinctive of the toxins that make up the fossil fuel. Sprinkle mushroom spores over the Petri dish and let it sit for two weeks in an incubator, and surprise, the petroleum and its smell will disappear. "The mushrooms consumed the petroleum!" says Mohamed Hijri, a professor of biological sciences and researcher at the University of Montreal's Institut de recherche en biologie v?g?tale (IRBV).

Hijri co-directs a project with B. Franz Lang promoting nature as the number one ally in the fight against contamination. Lang holds the Canada Research Chair on Comparative and Evolutionary Genomics and is a professor at the university's Department of Biochemistry. By using bacteria to stimulate the exceptional growth capacity of certain plants and microscopic mushrooms, Hijri and Lang believe they are able to create in situ decontamination units able to successfully attack the most contaminated sites on the planet.

The recipe is simple. In the spring, we plant willow cuttings at 25-centimeter intervals so the roots dive into the ground and soak up the degrading contaminants in the timber along with the bacteria. At the end of the season, we burn the stems and leaves and we are left with a handful of ashes imprisoning all of the heavy metals that accumulated in the plant cells. Highly contaminated soil will be cleansed after just a few cycles. "In addition, it's beautiful," says Hijri pointing to a picture of dense vegetation covering the ground of an old refinery after just three weeks.

Thanks to the collaboration of an oil company from the Montreal area, the researchers had access to a microbiological paradise: an area where practically nothing can grow and where no one ventures without protective gear worthy of a space traveler. This is where Hijri collected microorganisms specialized in the ingestion of fossil fuels. "If we leave nature to itself, even the most contaminated sites will find some sort of balance thanks to the colonization by bacteria and mushrooms. But by isolating the most efficient species in this biological battle, we can gain a lot of time."

Natural and artificial selection

This is the visible part of the project, which could lead to a breakthrough in soil decontamination. The project is called Improving Bioremediation of Polluted Soils Through Environmental Genomics and it requires time-consuming sampling and fieldwork as well as DNA sequencing of the species in question. The project involves 16 researchers from the University of Montreal and McGill University, many of which are affiliated with the IRBV. The team also includes four researchers, lawyers and political scientists, specializing in the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social aspects of genomics.

The principle is based on a well-known process in the sector called phytoremediation that consists in using plant matter for decontamination. "However, in contaminated soils, it isn't the plant doing most of the work," says Lang. "It's the microorganisms i.e. the mushrooms and bacteria accompanying the root. There are thousands of species of microorganisms and our job is to find the best plant-mushroom-bacteria combinations."

Botanist Michel Labrecque is overseeing the plant portion of the project. The willow seems to be one of the leading species at this point given its rapid growth and premature foliation. In addition, its stem grows even stronger once it has been cut. Therefore, there is no need to plant new trees every year. However, the best willow species still needs to be determined.

Gov't: US not responsible for Europe's debt woes (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Wary of Europe's deepening debt crisis, President Barack Obama said Monday the United States stands ready to do its part to help the continent, even as the White House ruled out any financial contributions from U.S. taxpayers.

Meantime, a top European official offered his assurances to Obama and the American people that Europe's leaders fully understood the magnitude of the crisis. But European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso warned that decisions on how to solve the economic woes could take time.

The annual meeting between U.S. and European Union officials came amid growing fears over the future of the euro. Experts say that without drastic action, the euro could be days away from collapsing, a scenario that could cause more financial damage to the already shaky American economy.

While Obama offered no specifics on how the U.S. may be willing to assist Europe, he said failing to resolve the continent's debt crisis could damage a U.S. economy saddled with slow growth and 9 percent unemployment.

"If Europe is contracting, or if Europe is having difficulties, then it's much more difficult for us to create good here jobs at home," Obama said at the conclusion of the day-long summit.

While Obama has offered support to his European peers, the U.S. believes the Europeans have the financial capacity to solve the debt crisis on their own.

But some U.S. allies, including Finland and the Netherlands, have called for the International Monetary Fund to be bolstered with more capital so that it could in turn help stem Europe's debt crisis from deepening and spreading.

The U.S. is the single-biggest stakeholder in the IMF. And earlier Monday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the IMF has substantial resources already.

"We do not in any way believe that additional resources are required from the United States and from American taxpayers," Carney said.

European leaders are set to meet Dec. 9 to discuss next steps in tackling the financial crisis. New ideas were circulating Monday for how to finally cap the debt woes that began in Greece two years ago and have spread to other larger economies, most notably Italy.

One idea gaining momentum, was a radical proposal in which countries that use the common currency would cede control of a big chunk of their budgets to a central authority. Some say the proposal would be a big leap toward a United States of Europe, a move that could greatly enhance European stability, but at the cost, critics say, of national sovereignty and democratic accountability.

Another plan being aired in the face of fierce German resistance is for the eurozone's six triple A rated nations to pool their resources through a joint bond to prop up some of the single currency bloc's most indebted members. Germany, the EU's richest member, rejects the idea because it fears it would be tapped for the lion's share of the bailout

Back in Washington, Barroso said Europe's leaders are taking strong steps to solve what he called an unprecedented situation.

"We are absolutely serious about the magnitude of the challenges," he said. "You have to understand that sometimes some decisions take time."

Carney said that Obama, along with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, would continue to stay in close contact with European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Greece later this week to meet with new Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, who took office earlier this month.

While Monday's meeting between Obama and European Union leaders centered on the global economy, there were also discussions on supporting democracy in the Middle East and North Africa, cooperation on counterterrorism and transatlantic law enforcement, and Iran.

Euro "Stability Union" could be achieved fast: Schaeuble (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Euro zone countries could create a Stability Union to secure deeper fiscal integration relatively quickly, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Sunday.

"One can do that quickly," he told ARD television, referring to changes to the Lisbon Treaty that Germany has wanted to allow much tighter budget controls in the 17 euro zone countries.

"The goal is for the member states of the common currency to create their own Stability Union and to concentrate on that," Schaeuble said.

In Brussels earlier on Sunday, EU officials said Germany and France are exploring radical methods of securing deeper and more rapid fiscal integration among euro zone countries, aware that getting broad backing for the necessary treaty changes may not be possible.

Germany's original plan was to secure agreement among all 27 EU countries for a limited change to the Lisbon Treaty by the end of 2012, a way of shoring up the region's defences against the debt crisis.

But in meetings with EU leaders in recent weeks, it has become clear to both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy that it may not be possible to get all 27 countries on board, EU sources say.

Even if that were possible, it could take a year or more to secure the changes while market attacks on Italy, Spain and now France suggest bold measures are needed within weeks.

As a result, senior French and German civil servants have been exploring other ways of achieving the goal, either via an agreement among just the euro zone countries, or a separate agreement outside the EU treaty that could involve a core of around 8-10 euro zone countries, officials say.

Schaeuble said a Stability Union could be a decisive step to winning more confidence from the markets.

"The important signal, to convince financial investors in the world, is and remains a stable currency," Schaeuble said. That means that every euro zone member has to do its homework on its budget discipline.

"We want to ensure that through treaty changes," he said.

EU's Rehn: Italy moving in right direction (AP)

ROME ? Economic reforms being shepherded by Italy's new premier are "going in the right direction" but more action is needed, the EU's monetary chief said Friday, hours after Italy's borrowing rates skyrocketed during bond auctions.

Olli Rehn also told reporters after meeting Premier Mario Monti in Rome that Italy's economic fundamentals were "solid."

Many investors did not appear to agree with his sentiments, however, and Italy's soaring borrowing rates Friday temporarily battered stock markets in Europe. Investors worried whether Monti, an economist who came to power only a week ago, will succeed in bringing the eurozone's third-largest economy back from the brink of financial disaster.

Monti's medicine ? budget rigor and growth measures while fairly distributing the social pain ? are "the right ones," Rehn said. "I fully endorse them."

Economic reforms announced so far, including liberalizing professions and encouraging employers to hire and making it easier for them to transfer worker are "going in the right direction," the monetary affairs commissioner said, after a day of meetings that included talks with top economic and banking officials. "We expect that more will follow."

Specifically, Rehn said, "Italy needs a comprehensive and wide-ranging package of reforms to kick-start growth and offer young people not only more jobs but better jobs."

Against a backdrop of Europe's escalating debt crisis, Friday's dismal auction results were another sign that Monti's new technocratic government faces a battle to convince investors it has a strategy to cut down the country's euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion) debt. They are also likely to fuel calls for the European Central Bank to use more firepower to cool down a rapidly escalating debt crisis.

Driving market fears is the knowledge that Italy is too big for Europe to bail out, like it has done with smaller nations Greece, Portugal and Ireland. Given the size of its debts ? Italy must refinance $300 billion next year alone ? the government has to continually tap investors for money. But when borrowing rates get too high, that can fuel a potentially devastating debt spiral which could bankrupt the country.

Friday's auctions showed that investors see Italian debt as increasingly risky. The country had to pay an average yield of 7.814 percent to raise euro2 billion ($2.7 billion) in two-year bills ? sharply higher than the 4.628 percent it paid in the previous auction in October. And even raising euro8 billion ($10.7 billion) for six months proved exorbitantly expensive, as the yield for that spiked to 6.504 percent, nearly double the 3.535 percent rate last month.

The App Store Game Subscription Plan That Wasn?t

bigfishlogoYesterday, Bloomberg published a story stating that Apple had made a major (and, frankly, somewhat surprising) change to its App Store policies: it was going to begin allowing game publishers to sell bundles of games as monthly subscriptions, as opposed to a la carte. Historically all games on the App Store have been sold as one-off purchases (or for free), and they can generate further revenue by offering in-app goods and services. But last week, game developer Big Fish Games introduced an app with a different model. Gamers would purchase the app, and, for $6.99 a month, they'd have access to "dozens" of games within that application (in other words, each game would not require a separate download). Such a model could potentially be a big deal for other gaming companies like Zynga, which could establish 'hub' apps rather than having to launch a new app for each game. As it turns out, that doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.

EU court says ISPs can't be forced to monitor users (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Internet service providers cannot be forced to block their users from downloading songs illegally, as such an order would breach EU rules, Europe's highest court said on Thursday in a ruling welcomed by a consumer group.

The Luxembourg-based EU Court of Justice (ECJ) issued its verdict in a case involving Belgian music royalty collecting society SABAM and Belgian telecom operator Belgacom unit Scarlet.

SABAM asked a Belgian court to order Scarlet to install a device to prevent its users from downloading copyrighted works. The court ruled in SABAM's favor and order Scarlet to install such a device. However, Scarlet then challenged the ruling, prompting the Belgian court to seek advice from the ECJ.

"EU law precludes the imposition of an injunction by a national court which requires an internet service provider to install a filtering system with a view to preventing the illegal downloading of files," the ECJ said.

"The filtering system would also be liable to infringe the fundamental rights of its (Scarlet's) customers, namely their right to protection of their personal data and their right to receive or impart information," the Luxembourg court said.

European consumer organization BEUC said the ruling should get authorities and companies thinking about a fairer way to provide easily accessible legal digital content for consumers.

"The online marketplace has proven fertile ground, consumers spend billions of euro each year," said Monique Goyens, BEUC's director-general. "Trying to criminalize individual consumers for file-sharing is just singing into the wind."

One lawyer said the verdict clarified who is liable for what.

"It's a good ruling, it confirms basic principles about the allocation of responsibilities between ISPs and the ISP's users and ensures that ISPs will not be burdened by monitoring obligations," said Thomas Graf, a partner at law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

Collecting societies collect royalty payments on behalf of authors, singers and performers. There are 24 such national organizations across the 27-country European Union.

The case is C-70/10, Scarlet Extended SA v. Societe Belge des auteurs, compositeurs et editeurs (SABAM).

Allergy Sufferers Should Prepare for Holiday Triggers (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Nov. 24 (HealthDay News) -- The holiday season can be a challenge for people with allergies and asthma, but there are a number of things they can do to protect themselves, allergists say.

Food allergies are an issue because many traditional holiday foods contain such allergens as wheat, soy, dairy and nuts, the experts pointed out in a news release from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).

For example, self-basting turkeys can include soy, wheat and dairy. A natural turkey is the safest choice since it contains nothing but turkey and water. Another recommendation: Use wheat-free bread for the stuffing.

To make allergen-free mashed potatoes, use chicken broth and margarine instead of milk and butter. It's also a good idea to forgo slivered almonds as a topping on the green bean casserole, the ACAAI suggests.

Pumpkin allergies are rare but can cause problems. It's a good idea to have alternative desserts or to suggest that guests with serious food allergies bring their own desserts.

Visiting or staying at other people's homes can expose allergy and asthma sufferers to a number of environmental triggers. For example, fancy guest soaps may contain fragrances that can cause allergic contact dermatitis. So you should use regular soap or bring your own.

If your hosts have pets, asking them to confine the critters in the basement won't do much good. Pet dander gets everywhere and is nearly impossible to eliminate. Your best bet is to use allergy treatments such as antihistamines, nasal sprays and decongestants or appropriate asthma medications, the ACAAI advises.

If you're hosting someone with allergies or asthma, thoroughly dust the extra bedroom and wash bedding in hot water to eliminate dust mites. If you're a guest, consider bringing your own pillow or allergen-proof pillow cover.

"A number of holiday-related triggers can make people sneeze, wheeze or, in the case of food allergies, have a more serious reaction," said Dr. Myron Zitt, past president of the ACAAI, in the news release. "But by planning ahead, the day can go smoothly for people with allergies or asthma."

(AP) ? UCLA missed shots, threw sloppy passes, seemingly had no chance at stopping Kansas on defense.

Then something happened: The Bruins' shots started falling, the Jayhawks were missing theirs and the lead quickly dwindled.

UCLA just couldn't sustain it ? not after falling into that big of a hole.

The Bruins trimmed a 20-point lead down to five before running out of steam in a 72-56 loss to No. 14 Kansas in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational on Tuesday night.

"We can't keep coming back and trying to come back ? it's difficult to get over that hill," said Jerime Anderson, who had 14 points. "I'm very inspired by our team's comeback and our will and our fight, but we just need to put ourselves in a better position to win the game."

Kansas looked unbeatable early and flustered in the middle before securing a hard-earned victory.

All that work just to face an even more formidable challenge: No. 6 Duke, the undisputed king of Maui, in the championship game.

Two of college basketball's blue bloods in paradise, playing with a title on the line in a tiny gym in an atmosphere unlike any other.

Yeah, this could be good.

"I will bet the atmosphere for tomorrow night's game will be as good an atmosphere as this building's seen for this tournament," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "And this may be as good a neutral-court atmosphere as there is in college basketball, better than the NCAA tournament because you can feel the crowd."

The Jayhawks almost blew their shot.

Kansas (3-1) looked as though it was going to run away from the Bruins at the start, going up 12 points in the first 6 minutes and building from there.

The Jayhawks fizzled with a flurry of turnovers and defensive breakdowns to let UCLA back in it, then pulled away over the final 5 minutes for a harder-than-expected victory.

Elijah Johnson scored 23 points, Thomas Robinson had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Tyshawn Taylor added 13 points and six assists for Kansas.

Next up for the Jayhawks is Duke, the undefeated four-time champions in Maui in what could be one of the most exciting championship games in the 28-year history of the Maui Invitational.

"This is one of the games when you come to Kansas, you sign up for," Taylor said. "This is one of those games we'll probably always remember."

The Bruins tried to ruin it.

UCLA (1-3) got off to a brutal start and rallied to trim a 20-point lead down to five. The Bruins lingered for a little while before running out of steam, headed toward the third-place game instead of the championship.

Tyler Lamb led UCLA with 15 points.

"We were right there," Anderson said. "That second-half comeback is much easier if we're even or closer in the first half. Some things don't go our way, we come back and if a team makes another run, that's the hardest thing to do is come back from two runs."

Swinging the ball around in halfcourt sets and getting out on the break, the Jayhawks opened the game with a 14-2 run and kept pushing. Kansas hit 12 of 24 shots in the half ? 5 of 9 from 3-point range ? had 10 assists and got 13 points from Johnson to lead 43-26.

The Jayhawks still looked as though they were going to run away with it to start the second half, then went into a funk.

Unable to stop the Bruins or hold onto the ball, Kansas went nearly 6? minutes without a field goal as UCLA trimmed a 20-point lead down to five with 8 minutes left.

The Jayhawks finally put a stop to UCLA's momentum with a couple of baskets by Robinson, then pulled away as the Bruins cooled off.

"We knew they weren't going to just go away and lay down," Taylor said. "We got out to a big lead early, but we knew we had to continue to play. We just had to keep battling out there."

UCLA opened a season of expectations in disappointing fashion, losing by double digits to Loyola Marymount and Middle Tennessee State. The Bruins avoided a potential meltdown in the Maui opener, turning a two-point halftime lead over Division II Chaminade into a blowout.

UCLA blew the game open with a 29-3 run and turned away any thought of a comeback by blocking 12 of the Silverswords' shots in the 92-60 victory.

But Kansas isn't anything like Chaminade, as the Bruins learned in a hurry.

Unable to find any room against the Jayhawks' scrambling defense, UCLA missed its first six shots, had five turnovers and just two free throws until Reeves Nelson scored on a 3-pointer at the 13:36 mark.

The best the Bruins could do after that was get within six points and Kansas didn't let that last, storming the Bruins a second time to push the lead to 19 before the half was over.

Then something clicked for UCLA.

Forcing turnovers and stroking 3-pointers, the Bruins went on a 12-0 run midway through the second half and kept dropping shots to pull within 57-52.

That turned out to be it for UCLA, which will face No. 15 Michigan in the third-place game.

"I was really happy the way the guys fought back in the second half," UCLA coach Ben Howland said. "We had it down to five ... and I think we ran out of gas."

India's Tata Sons picks family outsider as chief (AP)

MUMBAI, India ? Family outsider Cyrus Mistry will take over from leading Indian industrialist Ratan Tata when he retires as chairman of Tata Sons next year, the board said Wednesday.

Mistry was appointed Wednesday as deputy chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company for a sprawling salt-to-SUV family empire. The board said he is to hold that job as Tata grooms him to take over in December 2012.

Tata Sons owns the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, as well as Tetley Tea. The Tata Group also includes Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Tata Power.

Most analysts had expected Tata to appoint a successor from within the family. Tata's younger half-brother, Noel, was a frequently discussed heir.

Mistry, 43, is the youngest son of Pallonji Mistry, whose family is the largest individual shareholder in Tata Sons with an 18 percent stake.

Mistry was appointed to the Tata Sons board in 2006 at the urging of Ratan Tata himself, said Indrajit Gupta, the editor of Forbes India.

"It's big shoes to fill," Gupta said. "Does he have the experience to lead a diversified company of this size? The answer is no. But neither would any other contender."

Cyrus Mistry also keeps a low profile, unlike his elder brother Shapoor, who has a reputation for flamboyance, a great love of horses and a risk-taking entrepreneurial streak.

"Cyrus is much more analytical, quiet, reserved. He's done a competent job with the construction business and taking it overseas. He's a good listener from what one hears," said Gupta.

Mistry now is managing director of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, which has interests in construction, real estate, infrastructure and textiles.

But it is a fraction of the size of the Tata empire. One of India's oldest industrial houses, Tata comprises over 100 companies with revenues last fiscal year of $83.3 billion.

Elizabeth Olsen Talks 'Amazing' 2011

Actress' banner year has been 'learning experience,' she tells MTV News as part of Thankful Week.
By Eric Ditzian

Elizabeth Olsen

By any sort of Hollywood metric, Elizabeth Olsen has had a wonderful year. In January, the actress became the talk of Sundance with the debut of the harrowing drama "Martha Marcy May Marlene" and a claustrophobic horror flick, "Silent House."

In subsequent months she took on roles opposite everyone from Zac Efron to Robert De Niro, and she'll soon star with Glenn Close in the period drama "Therese Raquin." And as 2011 inches to a close, her name has cropped up in awards-season talk: She's already nabbed an ensemble Gotham Awards nomination and could well find herself in the Golden Globe and Oscar mix.

Not bad. But when you consider this is the first year that Olsen has been on the entertainment scene — unless you count long-ago appearances with her sisters in those "Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley" musicals — the 22-year-old's 2011 goes from generally wonderful to simply magical (and no doubt jealousy-inducing for her peers).

And that's why we've named Elizabeth Olsen one of the actresses we're most thankful for this year. We recently sat down with her to look back at her accomplishments, to look forward to what she has coming down the line, and to find out what she'll do if she ends up winning awards this season.

MTV News: You know you might have to start giving some speeches soon ...

Elizabeth Olsen: I have zero expectation on any of that. I didn't even have anything beforehand that I could think the movie would become what it has become, with a great distributor, good buzz. This year has been such a learning experience. It's been amazing. I feel like I have an understanding of so many different aspects after making a movie. Before I didn't even know how to make a movie, and then I realized I didn't even know how to promote a movie, and then I realized there's a whole process of doing that that's even longer than making the movie. You just have to be thankful that you have the opportunity to get to do that and people want to talk to you about your work.

MTV: Is there one surreal moment from this year that encapsulates what a crazy run you've been having?

Olsen: The first thing that came to my head when you said that was I remember when I finished making ["Martha Marcy"] and I had dinner with my friend in the East Village. I was totally thrown off because I was in upstate New York for three months, and then I was in the East Village on a Saturday night and was so confused that people acted the way they acted. I was like, "Why are people so abrasive? It's so weird." I remember telling my friend, talking about making this movie, that I literally had the best experience of my life working on something. And that's including all the fun stuff you made with your friends in elementary school.

MTV: Speaking of promoting a film, do you read your own press at this point?

Olsen: At this point I'm interested in those things. Give me a couple months and I probably won't be. I don't know why. I think those opinions change all the time. Right now I'm just interested because I'm fascinated by the movie so I'm fascinated about what people think and get from the movie, because it is very unique.

MTV: Your co-star John Hawkes has compared your performance in "Martha Marcy" to Jennifer Lawrence's in "Winter's Bone." With "Hunger Games" she's now made the leap to a high-profile franchise. Is it only a matter of time before we see you in a "Transformers" or a "Spider-Man"?

Olsen: I don't know, but I don't think so. I'm just trying to pick whatever's most interesting to me at that point. I'm not trying to think of things studio or non-studio. There are a bunch of things I'd like to do in 2012 that are all very different from each other. What they all have in common are amazing people to work with and an interesting character to try and create.

MTV: Above and beyond the acting, do you have ambitions to write or direct?

Olsen: No, I don't. I like doing this. Dialogue I'm very bad at. I do like writing essays.

MTV: That is kind of nerdy.

Olsen: I know! I like writing essays. I have to write one tonight. So much fun!

MTV: Have you adjusted to being on set away from friends and family? Because that experience can be isolating.

Olsen: I would like to think that I'm really good at adjusting to changes. But I'm not as good as I thought I was. When I was working in Spain, that was really hard. It was a long shoot and it was Spain and I was coming in the middle of shooting, so everyone had already been there for six weeks and no one was going out to explore the city anymore. I was just by myself. But in situations like that, you do call your family. My sisters came and visited me. It was hard to be there and not even have the option of making a quick phone call and meeting up with someone. But now when I look back on being in Spain, I don't really think of it as being lonely. But at the moment, you know, I thought I really knew what loneliness was. I was like, "This is so lonely!"

MTV: Let's talk about "Very Good Girls," in which you'll be co-starring with Dakota Fanning. When is that shoot going to happen?

Olsen: We have to wait, because it's set in New York in the summertime. We'll do it next year. Dakota and I know each other, since we have the same mutual friends and went to the same high school. We've had dinner with the director, just chatting and trying to figure out what we can do to maybe change the script a bit, change scenes.

MTV: What was the key thing that attracted you to the role?

Olsen: The thing that's great about this script is I treat my relationships with my girlfriends as family and as probably the most important relationships in my life. I've had the same friends since I was in kindergarten. I feel like a lot of times in film and television, you don't get a chance to understand that type of relationship. "Sex in the City" is the closest thing you get to it. I think ["Very Good Girls"] is a great depiction of two young girls' friendship when they're graduating high school.

MTV: It seems like this role is the closest to your experience.

Olsen: Totally. It's important to be in a film like that. And everyone involved is going to be great to work with.

Check out everything we've got on "Martha Marcy May Marlene."

A glance at new sanctions imposed on Iran (AP)

The Obama administration announced a new set of sanctions against Iran on Monday in an effort to apply greater pressure to get Tehran to halt its suspected nuclear weapons program.

The new sanctions, which were coordinated with Britain and Canada, build on elements of previous sanction efforts. The efforts announced Monday:

_Use a section of the Patriot Act to identify for the first time Iran's entire banking sector, including the country's central bank, as a threat to other governments and institutions. The designation of Iran as a "primary money laundering concern" will require increased monitoring by U.S. banks to make sure that they and their foreign affiliates are avoiding all contact with Iranian financial institutions. The United States was joined in this action by Britain and Canada.

_Impose sanctions on Iran's petrochemical industry, prohibiting U.S. companies from providing goods, services and technology to support Iran's production of petrochemicals. This industry represents Iran's second biggest export after crude oil.

_Expands existing energy sanctions with the aim of making it more difficult for Iran to operate, maintain and modernize its oil and gas sector.

_Designates 11 individuals and business entities for sanctions because of their alleged roles in assisting Iran's prohibited nuclear programs.

Review: Nook Tablet is Kindle Fire's worthy foe (AP)

NEW YORK ? Listen, and I'll tell you the story of the bookstore chain that stormed into the hottest category in consumer electronics and conquered.

It's a nice underdog story, right? A bit like the tale of plucky rebels who attacked Lord Vader's Death Star.

But that was fiction. Barnes & Noble Inc.'s new Nook Tablet ($249) is a solid product, worthy of duking it out with Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire. Considering that the Nook comes from a desert planet where the only entertainment was shooting womp rats (Sorry, I mean "from a bookstore chain."), it's really impressive.

But the Nook doesn't quite muster enough force to blow up a Death Star. Barnes & Noble's earlier Nooks were dedicated book-reading devices, and the Tablet is at most a half-way step into the world of general-purpose tablet computing.

Like the new Kindle Fire, the Tablet has a 7-inch, touch-sensitive color screen, about half the size of the iPad's. It's the same screen as on the Nook Color, the e-reader Barnes & Noble launched a year ago. I thought it was the best e-reader yet when it launched.

The Tablet improves on the Nook Color mainly by beefing up the processor and the memory and extending the battery life to 11.5 hours of reading, or 9 hours of video.

The Tablet also has improved software, but the Color will be getting the same software through a downloadable update.

The Tablet is debuting with Netflix and Hulu applications. Coupled with the nice, sharp screen, that makes for a good device for that TV and movie fix _as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi. The apps actually highlight one of the shortcomings of the Tablet: there's no way (short of hacking the software) to use it for offline viewing of movies you buy or rent.

Barnes & Noble promises to provide access to some sort of movie store next year. Amazon, meanwhile, launched the Kindle Fire with access not just to Netflix and Hulu, but to its own store with downloadable video, plus free streaming content for Amazon Prime subscribers.

Barnes & Noble is also well behind when it comes to the selection of third-party applications: it has about 1,000 available today. That compares to just under 10,000 at Amazon, and 500,000 on the iPad.

However, the Nook has these features over the Fire:

? Faster processor and more memory for software operations, which means faster Web browsing and magazine page-flipping.

? Longer battery life.

? Twice as much storage space: 16 gigabytes compared to eight. Don't get too excited about this, though. What Barnes & Noble has left out of its marketing material is that only 1 gigabyte is available for content that isn't bought from Barnes & Noble. Since books don't take up much space and Barnes & Noble doesn't sell movies, much of the 16 gigabytes is likely to be wasted.

? A slot for memory cards. This is the cure for the lack of memory for non-Barnes & Noble content. You can add another 16 gigabytes of memory by buying a $20 card.

? The ability to load books from third-party stores like Google Books. On the Kindle, you can only read books from Amazon.

? Netflix streams are sharper. Barnes & Noble initially claimed they were in high definition, but that X-wing doesn't fly: the Tablet's screen isn't high-definition.

? Children's books with built-in narration (some Kindle apps have this).

? A microphone. This doesn't have a lot of uses at the moment, but it does allow you to record your own narration.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, the Kindle Fire has these features over the Nook:

? A lower price: $199.

? The Comixology app, the most popular one for comic books. On the Nook, you're pretty much limited to buying electronic comics from Barnes & Noble.

For the most part, the Nook Tablet justifies the higher price tag compared to the Kindle. Of course, anyone with money to spend should also be looking at the iPad 2, which starts at $499 and does all of what these smaller tablets do ? plus a whole lot more. That's one Death Star that won't be exploding in a hurry.

At British hearing, stars turn tables on tabloids

(AP) ? They've been hacked and libeled, stalked and slandered. Now the public figures whose personal lives have long offered grist for Britain's news mill have been given a rare chance to confront their tabloid tormentors.

Film star Hugh Grant, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, and the father of missing girl Madeleine McCann are among those due to testify over the next week at the U.K. inquiry into media ethics ? a judicial body that could recommend sweeping changes to the way Britons get their news.

The nationally televised inquiry would give many of those in the public eye an unprecedented chance to challenge those who write about them, said Cary Cooper, a professor at northern England's Lancaster University and the author of "Public Faces, Private Lives."

"This is the first time the celebrities have been able to strike back," Cooper said. "I think it will have an impact, and the media might ? for a while at least ? pull away."

Speaking ahead of the testimony, victims' lawyer David Sherborne told the inquiry multiple tales of shattered privacy, broken lives and even suicides stemming from relentless media intrusion.

"When people talk of public interest in exposing the private lives of well-known people or those close to them, this is the real, brutally real impact which this kind of journalism has," Sherborne said.

Britain's media ethics probe was set up in the wake of the scandal over phone hacking at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World, which was shut in July after it became clear that the tabloid had systematically broken the law. Most horrific was the news that the tabloid had broken into the phone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler in its search for scoops.

Cooper acknowledged that celebrities like Grant or actress Sienna Miller ? another star due to give evidence ? have struggled to get much in the way of public sympathy even when it was shown that their privacy had been invaded. But he said their appearance alongside crime victims such as Bob and Sally Dowler or Gerry McCann could mark a shift in attitudes.

"They're going to get hit worse by the Milly Dowler family and witnesses of that ilk," he said.

Sherborne, in a two-and-half-hour-long presentation Wednesday, promised to make journalists squirm.

Most powerful among his accusations was the suggestion that media coverage had driven some celebrities' family members to the brink of suicide ? or beyond.

Sherborne said that former Formula One racing boss Max Mosley believed that the suicide of his 39-year-old son Alexander could also be at least in part attributed to "the very public humiliation" dealt to his father by the News of the World's expose of his sexual shenanigans.

He went on to outline the case of soccer player Garry Flitcroft, whose life was turned upside down by a newspaper's revelation that he'd cheated on his wife. Flitcroft's children were teased in school, his family was tracked by helicopter and his ailing father fell into a deepening depression before taking his own life, the lawyer said.

Another case involved Charlotte Church, the British singer who shot to stardom as a teenager. Sherborne said she'd been subjected to waves of harassment. Photographers chased her in cars, tried to take pictures up her skirt and cut holes in bushes to install secret cameras. So hungry was the press for scoops about her private life that journalists revealed she was pregnant before she had even told her parents.

Worse still was the News of the World's expose of her father's affair in 2005. Sherborne said that Church's mother had attempted suicide shortly before the story ran, but that rather than hold back, "the newspaper approached her mother directly and persuaded her to give them an exclusive, despite her fragile condition, as part of a Faustian pact that in return they would not run another lurid follow-up story about her husband's affair."

Others testifying over the next seven days include comic actor Steve Coogan, whose romantic exploits have been exhaustively documented, and broadcaster Anne Diamond, who was targeted by Murdoch's press after she challenged the mogul about his ethics.

Chris Jeffries, who was wrongly implicated in the murder of his tenant, is also due to give evidence, along with soccer star Paul Gascoigne's ex-wife Sheryl; human rights activist Jane Winter; former army intelligence officer Ian Hurst; and Margaret Watson, whose teenage daughter Diane was stabbed to death in 1991.

UN: Concentrations of greenhouse gases hit record (AP)

GENEVA ? Global warming gases have hit record levels in the world's atmosphere, with concentrations of carbon dioxide up 39 percent since the start of the industrial era in 1750, the U.N. weather agency said Monday.

The new figures for 2010 from the World Meteorological Organization show that CO2 levels are now at 389 parts per million, up from about 280 parts per million a quarter-millenium ago. The levels are significant because the gases trap heat in the atmosphere.

WMO Deputy Secretary-General Jeremiah Lengoasa said CO2 emissions are to blame for about four-fifths of the rise. But he noted the lag between what gets pumped into the atmosphere and its effect on climate.

"With this picture in mind, even if emissions were stopped overnight globally, the atmospheric concentrations would continue for decades because of the long lifetime of these greenhouse gases in the atmosphere," he said.

Negotiators from virtually all the world's nations will gather later this month in South Africa to try to agree on steps to head off the worst of the climate disruptions that researchers say will result if concentrations hit around 450 parts per million.

That could happen within several decades at the current rate, though some climate activists and vulnerable nations say the world has already passed the danger point of 350 parts per million and must somehow undo it.

The WMO said the increase of 2.3 parts per million in CO2 in the atmosphere between 2009 and 2010 shows an acceleration from the average 1.5 parts per million increase during the 1990s.

But there are seasonal fluctuations, too. During the summer growing season, plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In winter, the concentration of C02 rises as vegetation and other biomass decompose.

Since 1750, WMO says, atmospheric concentrations of CO2 have risen 39 percent, those of nitrous oxide have gone up 20 percent and concentrations of methane jumped 158 percent.

Its report Monday cites fossil fuel-burning, loss of forests that absorb CO2 and use of fertilizer as the main culprits.

Ocular fundus pathology and chronic kidney disease in a Chinese population.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:

BACKGROUND:

Previous study indicated a high prevalence of ocular fundus pathology among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), while the relationship between them has never been explored in a Chinese Population.

METHODS:

This cross-sectional study included 9 670 participants enrolled in a medical screening program. Ocular fundus examination was performed by ophthalmologists using ophthalmoscopes. The presence of eGFR less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and/or proteinuria was defined as CKD.

RESULTS:

Compared to participants without CKD, participants with CKD had higher prevalence of retinopathy (28.5% vs. 16.3%, P<0.001), glaucoma suspect (3.1% vs. 1.8%, P=0.004), age-related macular degeneration (1.7% vs. 0.9%, P=0.01) and overall eye pathology (32.0% vs. 19.4%, P<0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, the odds ratio of proteinuria for overall eye pathology and retinopathy was 1.29 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07-1.55) and 1.37 (95% CI 1.12-1.67), respectively. The results were robust after excluding participants with hypertension or with diabetes.

CONCLUSIONS:

Ocular fundus pathology is common among Chinese patients with CKD. Regular eye exam among persons with proteinuria is warranted.

Salesforce.com shares drop on tepid outlook (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Web-based software maker Salesforce.com Inc forecast current-quarter earnings broadly in line with Wall Street estimates and posted a quarterly net loss as its marketing and sales costs increased sharply.

The tepid outlook from one of the leaders in Internet-based "cloud" computing suggests it will not avoid the effects of broad cutbacks in corporate spending which have ravaged other technology firms.

Salesforce shares fell 6 percent after hours.

Chief Executive Marc Benioff said he was optimistic about companies' spending on technology and marketing, despite economic difficulties in Europe and Japan.

"I don't feel like we are going into a recession," he said on a conference call with analysts.

The San Francisco-based company reported a net loss of $3.8 million, or 3 cents per share, for the fiscal third quarter, compared with a profit of $21.1 million, or 15 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

The loss was due to a 49 percent jump in operating costs to $465.8 million, which outpaced sales growth. The cost of stock-based compensation more than doubled to $57 million from $26 million a year ago.

Excluding certain items, such as the stock-based compensation, its profit was 34 cents per share, beating the 31 cent average estimate by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters

I/B/E/S.

Sales rose 36 percent to $584 million, surpassing the $571.5 million expected by analysts.

For the current quarter, the company forecast profit, excluding items, of 39 cents to 40 cents per share, compared to Wall Street's estimate of 40 cents.

For fiscal 2013, it made its first sales forecast, of $2.88 billion to $2.92 billion, which includes projected revenue from Model Metrics, an acquisition expected to close this quarter. Excluding that deal, analysts are expecting sales of $2.79 billion.

Salesforce.com shares dropped 7 percent in after-hours trading to $117.78, after closing at $126.09 on the New York Stock Exchange.

MTV2 revives "Yo! MTV Raps" for one night only (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? For one night only, MTV2 is bringing back "Yo! MTV Raps!," the show that turned on a generation of MTV viewers to a mysterious new musical form called hip-hop.

The show, which originally aired from August 1988 through 1995, helped bring once little-known acts like Ice-T, N.W.A., A Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy to households across America as hip-hop exploded in popularity. The return comes after the revival of such MTV shows as "Beavis and Butt-head" and "120 Minutes."

The show will return as a 30-minute retrospective called "Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts," and will on MTV2 immediately after the first-ever "Sucker Free Awards" on December 4.

The awards will air at 11 p.m., followed by the "Yo!" special at midnight. The special will feature the artists behind three hip-hop classics: A Tribe Called Quest's "Scenario," Geto Boys' "My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me," and Ice Cube's "It Was a Good Day." ("Good Day" just happens to mention "Yo! MTV Raps" by name.)

The special will feature former hosts Fab 5 Freddy, Ed Lover and Dr. Dre, and hip-hop stars from the past and present. They include A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip, Geto Boys' Scarface, and Ice Cube, in addition to well Wiz Khalifa, DJ Khaled, Questlove, Busta Rhymes, Mac Miller, Machine Gun Kelly, Young Jeezy, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Phife, Fat Joe, Common, Mike Epps, Ice T, Meek Mill, Tyga, and Naughty By Nature.

DJ Premier will remix the iconic "Yo! MTV Raps" theme song for the special.

"It's a great moment to be reconnected with Yo! and examine the music that had a role in introducing hip-hop to music lovers globally," Ed Lover said. "By looking back at these classic songs in hip-hop it becomes clear that hip-hop would inevitably transcend distance and generations."

"In this Classic Cuts special, people will go back to a seminal time in hip-hop which many have called the 'Golden Era' -- resulting in records that are as meaningful today as they were back then," said Fab 5 Freddy, the original host of the show. "In order to appreciate how far hip-hop has come, you have to pay respect to the songs and artists that helped catapult the genre from a small community of fans to world domination."

Egyptians rally to protest military 'dictatorship'

Over 50,000 Egyptian protesters flocked to Cairo's Tahrir Square Friday to pressure the military government to transfer power to elected civilian rule, after the cabinet tried to enshrine the army's role in a constitutional proposal.

The protesters sang religious chants before Friday prayers, while others handed out fliers demanding the withdrawal of the constitutional proposal and presidential elections be held no later than April 2012.

"Does the government want to humiliate the people? The people revolted against Mubarak and they will revolt against the constitution they want to impose on us," a member of an orthodox Islamic Salafi group cried out over loud speakers, to the cheers of thousands of protesters.

"Down to military rule" and "No to making the army a state above the state" were some of the chants echoing across Tahrir Square.

Except for the preponderance of bearded men and veiled women typical of strict Islamists, the mass rally recalled the demonstrations in Tahrir Square during the 18-day bloody uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 18.

The rally was dominated by the country's most organized political group, the Muslim Brotherhood.

It was called to protest a document floated by the government that declares the military the guardian of "constitutional legitimacy," suggesting the armed forces could have the final word on major policies.

The Brotherhood says the document reinforces "dictatorship," and has promised an escalation if it is not shelved.

Organizers said Friday's rally was an attempt to put "the revolution back on track."

Other groups such as the April 6 movement are demanding a timetable for the end of military rule that began after Mubarak was deposed.

A military source said on Friday that the army would hand power to a civilian government in 2012, without giving a exact date.

Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Silmi showed a constitutional draft to political groups earlier this month that would give the army exclusive authority over its internal affairs and budget.

But negotiations over the plan between the government and Islamists and liberals have broken down, prompting political parties and democracy campaigners to protest.

"The protest ... is to reclaim power from the army and oppose Silmi's document," said Mohamed Fathi from the youth group the Front to Protect the Revolution.

In Tahrir Square, US not as hated anymore

Any extended protest by demonstrators camping in Tahrir Square could potentially destabilize preparations for a parliamentary vote due on November 28.

Political groups have demanded the military council announce a clear timetable for handing power over to an elected civilian government with a deadline for presidential elections no later than April 2012.

Salafi parties and movements who follow strict Islamic teachings were the earliest to galvanize support for the Friday protest, with the Muslim Brotherhood and a number of liberal parties following suit.

Thousands of Salafi protesters arrived in Cairo from different parts of the country, many waving flags and singing the national anthem while youth groups guarded entrances to the square to prevent thugs from slipping through.

"We came by bus from the Nile Delta. We have been called to come and show our refusal of army rule and support of civilian rule," said Mohamed Ali, a member of the Salafi Al-Asalah party.

In the port city of Alexandria, thousands of Islamists and youth groups also held a rally and planned to head to a military base in a show of protest against the army.

"We went down to demand change but they removed Mubarak and brought the Field Marshal," protesters in Alexandria chanted, referring to Mubarak's former defense minister who now heads the military council that is supposed to guide Egypt to democracy.

Thousands also gathered in the Northern Sinai and Upper Egypt regions to protest but they called for an Islamic state, not a civilian state, the demand of protesters in the capital and Alexandria.
