Cliff looms: Kicking the Can, Washington-style

(AP) ? When it comes to the nation's budget challenges, congressional leaders are fond of saying dismissively they don't want to kick the can down the road.

But now, a deadline hard ahead, even derided half-measures are uncertain as President Barack Obama and lawmakers struggle to avert across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts that comprise an economy-threatening fiscal cliff.

Congressional officials said Wednesday they knew of no significant strides toward a compromise over a long Christmas weekend, and no negotiations have been set.

After conferring on a conference call, the House Republican leadership said they remain ready for talks, but gave no hint they intend to call lawmakers back into session unless the Senate first passes legislation.

"The lines of communication remain open, and we will continue to work with our colleagues to avert the largest tax hike in American history, and to address the underlying problem, which is spending," the leadership said in a statement.

The Senate is due in session Thursday, although the immediate agenda includes legislation setting the rules for government surveillance of suspected spies and terrorists abroad, including Americans, as well as a measure providing $60 billion for victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Obama decided to cut short his Hawaii vacation for an overnight flight expected to get him back to the White House on Thursday.

Apart from the cliff, other financial challenges loom for divided government, where political brinkmanship has become the norm. The Treasury disclosed during the day it would take accounting measures to avoid reaching the government's borrowing limit of $16.4 trillion by year's end. The changes will provide about two months of additional leeway.

Separately, spending authority for much of the government will expire on March 27, 2013.

After weeks of negotiations, the president urged lawmakers late last week to scale back their ambitions for avoiding the fiscal cliff and send him legislation preventing tax cuts on all but the highest-earning Americans and extending unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. Longer, term, he said he still supports deficit cuts that were key to the earlier talks.

"Everybody's got to give a little bit in a sensible way," he said at the White House.

The House has no plans to convene, following last week's rebellion in which conservatives torpedoed Speaker John Boehner's legislation to prevent scheduled tax increases on most, while letting them take effect on million-dollar wage earners.

"How we get there, God only knows," the Ohio Republican said of efforts to protect the economy ? and taxpayers ? from the tax increases and spending cuts.

"Now is the time to show leadership, not kick the can down the road," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said a little over a week ago after Boehner announced he would shift his own focus from bipartisan talks to the approach that eventually was torpedoed by his own rank and file.

It's a phrase that political leaders use when they want to suggest others want to avoid tackling major problems, and one that Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and even Obama as well as Reid have used.

"We have a spending problem. We have to address it, And we're not going to address it by kicking the can down the road," the speaker said at a news conference late last week when he was asked about setting a vote on a plan that Democrats find acceptable.

Cantor recently used the same approach in challenging Obama to agree to savings from Medicare and other benefit programs. "This has to be a part of this agreement or else we just continue to dig the hole deeper, asking folks to allow us to kick the can down the road further and that we don't want to do," he said on Nov. 28.

In fact, it's a phrase that has been in use for over a year as Obama and Republicans jockey for position on pocketbook issues.

In July 2011, when he was struggling with Republicans over the threat of a first-ever government default, Obama said he had "heard reports that there may be some in Congress who want to do just enough to make sure that America avoids defaulting on our debt in the short term. But then wants to kick the can down the road when it comes to solving the larger problem, our deficit."

A few months later, an extension of a payroll tax cut was the issue, and Boehner was insisting on a year-long renewal rather than the temporary plan that passed the Senate with votes from lawmakers in both parties.

"How can you do tax policy for two months?" he asked on Dec. 18, 2011. "I believe that two months is just kicking the can down the road.

"The American people are tired of that."

At issue now is series of tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to kick in with the new year that economists caution could send the economy into a recession.

Obama, Congress set for one last effort on fiscal cliff

By Reuters

President Barack Obama is due back in Washington early Thursday for a final effort to negotiate a deal with Congress to avert or at least postpone the fiscal cliff of tax increases and government spending cuts set to begin next week.

No specific bill dealing with the cliff was on the schedule of either the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives, which are expected to return on Thursday after the holiday break. Investors are closely watching the talks, concerned that going over the cliff could throw the economy into recession.

President Obama and Congress are set to return to Washington to hopefully reach a deal on averting the fiscal cliff before the New Year. Luke Russert and NBC News' Kristen Welker and Mark Murray discuss.

Aides and members of Congress have said that a modest, last-minute measure to avoid the spending cuts and most of the tax hikes could pass the Democratic-controlled Senate if Republicans agree not to use a procedural roadblock known as a filibuster, a commitment that Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has so far not made.

But to win approval in the Republican-controlled House of any bill that raises taxes on anyone, a rare bipartisan vote would be required. All 191 Democrats would have to team with up with at least 26 Republicans to get a majority if the bill included tax hikes on the wealthiest Americans, as Obama is demanding.

Some of those votes could conceivably come from among the 34 Republican members who are either retiring or were defeated in the November elections and no longer have to worry about the political fallout.

Recommended:?GOP willing to bend on issues after election

In the alternative, Congress could let income taxes go up on everyone as now scheduled and then during the first week of January, scramble and get a quick deal to cut them back except for the highest brackets, along with a measure putting off the $109 billion in automatic spending cuts that most lawmakers want to avoid.

Once the clock ticks past midnight on December 31, no member of Congress would have to vote for a tax increase on anyone - taxes would have risen automatically - and the only votes would be to decrease tax rates for most Americans back to their 2012 levels.

President Obama is cutting his Hawaiian vacation short and heading back to Washington just a day after Christmas. Meanwhile, Congress returns tomorrow with just days left to reach a deal before the looming January 1 fiscal cliff. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

Obama and congressional lawmakers left Washington on Friday for the Christmas holiday with talks to avert the fiscal cliff in limbo.

The president will cut short his vacation in Hawaii and leave for Washington later on Wednesday, arriving in the capital on early Thursday.

Obama is expected to turn to a trusted Democratic ally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to help craft a quick deal.

White House aides began discussing details of the year-end budget measure with Senate Democratic counterparts early this week, a senior administration official said on Monday.

Lakewod Ranch developer John Neal makes his mark | Real Estate ...

LAKEWOOD RANCH

It's been a busy week for Lakewood Ranch-based developer John Neal.

Neal and his wife, Rebecca, recently sold seven parcels of property in the Ballard Park neighborhood for $284,661 to the City of Bradenton. The property was estimated to be worth $1.325 million.

Neal would like to see a rowing facility housed in the historic house on the property and a public park on other parcels that may revitalize the neighborhood around Ballard Elementary School.

Neal also announced plans to build large-scale homes in the Highfield neighborhood in Lakewood Ranch, an area just west of Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club he is exclusively developing. Priced from the low $900,000s to $2 million, the 4,988-square-foot model will be the largest new model home in Lakewood Ranch, regarded as one of the fastest growing communities in Florida.

In addition to his work as a land developer and builder, Neal helped raise close to $6,000 in gift cards for Lavallette Elementary, a school in New Jersey devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The gift cards purchased were mailed to the school last week and will be used to purchase supplies, books and desks.

The list goes on.

And so does Neal's aspirations for the future.

"I've always been pretty busy," said the 37-year-old builder from his office on Lakewood Ranch's Main Street.

The son of former state senator and prominent Manatee-area developer Pat Neal, John Neal is steadily making his mark on the Florida real estate market.

John Neal's company, John Neal Homes, a custom design building company, is an affiliate of Neal Communities, of which his father is president and CEO. John Neal Homes has sold 41 custom designs this year, totaling $30 million in receipts. His company's honors and accolades include Aurora Awards for models in Lakewood Ranch and Parade of Homes awards from the Home Builder's Association.

Other developers and real estate insiders recognize John Neal as an up and coming talent.

"He has the good fortune of learning from the master," said Carlos Beruff, president and owner of Medallion Homes, a semi-custom home building company. "There's nothing he can't accomplish as long he wants to do it. He has enough experience and smarts to go as far as he wants."

"I think that, from a builder's standpoint, John is definitely a student of the game," said Jimmy Stewart, vice president of sales for Lakewood Ranch Communities, a subsidiary of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch, the developer of Lakewood Ranch. "I think he is doing a great job as far as following the current market. He's producing products the market is looking for."

John Neal graduated from Hampton Sydney College in Virginia with a degree in economics. Upon graduation, he secured a position with a Virginia mortgage firm as its information technology department director. Soon, he returned to Florida and, in exchange for updating Neal Communities' technology, became his father's pupil, learning the housing market. By 2009, John Neal Homes was fully operational.

"He knows the business from the ground up," Pat Neal said.

"There's a lot of lessons you can learn from your parents if you just

listen," John Neal said.

He didn't try to be different from his father, he says. Instead, he acted on his own ideas.

"People have their own skills. I have skills that are the same, but also skills that are different from Pat," he said. "I focused on my own skills, which were more design oriented. I've always loved the home building industry. I'm mechanically inclined."

Pat Neal said where he's failed, John has succeeded.

"He's much more a people person than I am," Pat Neal said. "He's lived his whole life in Bradenton so he knows everybody, and so they like him. I don't see John creating sparks I create. He has the human relationship."

Others concurred.

"He's got the lineage there from Pat, but I think John is coming out on his own and he's doing some different stuff that Neal Communities in the past wasn't doing with the custom homes," said Alan Anderson, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association Manatee-Sarasota and former employee of Neal Communities. "It's a good combination for the both of them. John is making his own way and it's a good path for him."

That path may include another Neal involved in politics, but not in the foreseeable future.

"I have interest in leadership roles in the community, but it's not my time," he said. "I have a business and a young family, and I want to attend to that."

Philanthropy also was a trait John Neal learned from his father.

"As a land developer, and it's not written this way very often, but I don't see my job as building plots of land for houses. I see myself building houses for communities," John Neal said.

On Tuesday, John Neal will present a Manatee High School student with a $500 check for winning an essay contest describing their favorite area nonprofit organization. The check will be donated to the nonprofit in the student's honor.

"I see it as a responsibility for individuals and community people to do what they can to make their community a better place," he said. "I'm very proud of him, in every way," Pat Neal said. "Not only in the business element. He has a beautiful family and he's devoted to his daughters. He's a good son."

Cultural Appropriation

I tentatively bring you a topic that is quick to draw anger on the internet. I?m asking, as always, for levelheaded discussion.

Before I pose the question, let me give you a bit of a backstory:

I live in a western city that I would venture to guess houses more immigrants than locals. I?ve been raised around a vast number of cultures and grown to have appreciations for many aspects of them. For as long as I can remember I?ve been completely enamored by bhindis and saris. Aside from equating them to princess-like garb, I didn't know much about them. I was unsure if there was cultural significance to the saris, so I began to research. In my research a term called ?Cultural Appropriation? began to appear again and again. Not just saris, or bhindis, but other traditional wear and patterns were the topic of discussion. I invite you to search out theses articles, but what it boils down to is that it is frowned upon for westerners to take part in anything that is not theirs for the fear that the traditions will become watered down.

Please note, before responding that I?m specifically avoiding topics of racism. What I?m wondering is why is it culturally offensive to appreciate different parts of different cultures?

uftarfuri: Anxiety Panic Attacks | Health & Fitness ...

Anxiety panic attacks are a result of anxious thinking which is learned behaviour. An anxious person has usually suffered from different levels of anxiety for years and an increase in anxious thinking results in a full blown panic attack. Once the initial attack has been experienced the fear of more attacks holds the problem in place.

It is possible to overcome anxious behaviour, to learn to recognise it when it begins and to use strategies to change the thinking patterns before the problem turns into panic. Hypnosis can help because it re-trains the mind and your therapist should teach you strategies to use at home both between sessions and after therapy has finished.

Finding out how the mind works, (Metaphysics) and applying various, easy to learn and apply techniques can lift you out of the anxious behaviour and into a new way of being. You may have learned anxious behaviour as a child from the adults who raised you but you can choose to change that behaviour at any time you choose.

Anxiety Panic Attacks
Anxiety panic attacks are not usually brought on by what happens but by what you make of what has happened. They are often a result of 'what if's' which is the fear that something bad may happen. The constant worrying creates fear and anxiety and when that reaches a certain level the panic attack occurs.
A panic attack is a natural result of fear. Your body is displaying the normal 'fight or flight' response that can, in situations of real danger, save your life. Your body is working completely normally in the situation.

The trouble is that the majority of people who have this problem or any problem come to that matter don't know how to overcome it or let it go. They end up doing all the things that make the problem worse, holding it in position for many years in some instances.

Overcoming Anxiety Panic Attacks
Overcoming the problem, any problem, is easier than most people would believe. Instead of focusing on the problem, instead of trying to get rid of it, fighting it, hating it or being angry with it turn away from it and focus on what you want instead. It makes sense that you cannot get rid of a problem while you focus on it because whatever you focus on increases.

Instead of fighting anxiety panic attacks let go and choose again. Think about what would be the opposite to panic attack for you (it will be different for everyone). The opposite could be to trust that all will be well, to be relaxed, to be calm, cool and collected to be happy, healthy, abundant or safe.

When you've chosen what you would prefer instead say it. Say it out loud or in your head, make a jingle out of it and sing it to a popular or favorite tune. Use the following affirmation daily and as often as possible, "Every day, in every way I'm getting better and better and better." In this way you trancend the problem (get over it).

Keep going, don't stop at the first hurdle, all new habits have to be repeated over and over before they become our new reality. You didn't learn to drive by having one lesson and this new behaviour won't be installed with one or two repetitions. It is however guaranteed that if you persist you will very soon find a positive change in affairs.

To your amazing success

Election Day in sight, Romney shows a softer side to voters

Romney steps off his campaign plane in St. Petersburg, Fla (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.?Mitt Romney has never been a touchy feely kind of politician, a candidate willing to talk intimately about his personal life and past experiences as a way to connect with voters.

But with less than a month to go before Election Day, Romney has apparently made the calculation that he cannot win the presidency without opening up about his private world and proving to voters he's not the emotionally distant man Democrats have painted him to be.

Touring this key battleground state over the weekend, the GOP nominee debuted a re-tooled stump speech featuring poignant anecdotes about the people he's met on the campaign trail and those he's helped personally. They were stories the public has likely read or heard about before?including a tale of Romney's generosity to a dying 14-year-old boy as told by members of his Mormon church on stage at the Republican National Convention.

The difference this time was that Romney himself was speaking of his charitable deeds and how he had sought to offer comfort to the sick. According to aides, it was a glimpse of the "real Mitt" that the candidate's wife, Ann, and other close family and friends have long complained has been absent from coverage of the campaign trail.

Beginning with a Friday night rally in St. Petersburg, Romney spoke in highly personal terms of encounters with people who had proven to him "the greatness of the human spirit in my fellow Americans."

The most powerful of the stories was the candidate's relationship with David Oparowski, a 14-year-old Massachusetts boy and member of Romney's church who was dying of leukemia when he asked Romney to help draft his final will. Oparowski's parents told the boy's story ahead of Romney's nomination speech at the RNC in August, but this weekend was the first time Romney shared the story himself, telling audiences how much he genuinely "loved" the boy and did things to make him happy in his final days, including putting on an impromptu fireworks show.

Mitt Romney poses for a picture with the staff at Tin Fish restaurant at Tradition Town Square in Port St. Lucie,??

"It was clear he was not going to make it," Romney relayed to a once boisterous crowd that had gone silent. "I went into his room one night when he was in bed, and he asked me a very difficult question. He said, 'Mitt, what's next?' He called me 'Brother Romney.' 'What's next?' And I talked to him about what I believe is next."

A few days later, Romney told the crowd, Oparowski summoned him to his bedside to draft a final will. The boy had remembered that Romney had a degree from Harvard Law School.

"I went to David's bedside and got a piece of legal paper, made it look very official," Romney said. "And then David proceeded to tell me what he wanted to give his friends. Talked about his fishing rod, and who would get that. He talked about his skateboard, who'd get that. And his rifle, that went to his brother. I've seen the character of a young man like David, who wasn't emotional or crying. He had his eyes wide open. There's a saying: 'Clear eyes, full heart, can't lose.' David couldn't lose. I loved that young man."

Romney also spoke of Billy Hulse, a college classmate who had lived his life as a quadriplegic after suffering an accident many years ago. The GOP candidate told supporters he had seen his former classmate just a few weeks ago at a campaign event in Atlanta.

"It's not easy for Billy to get around [as a] quadriplegic. But his wife was there and he can't move, of course, his arms and his legs, and he can barely speak. And they brought him forward, a big crowd around him," Romney recalled. "I reached down and I put my hand on Billy's shoulder and I whispered into his ear, and I said, 'Billy, God bless you, I love ya.' And he whispered right back to me--and I couldn't quite hear what he said. He tried to speak loud enough for me to hear."

After a pause, Romney said, "He died the next day."

(Charles Dharapak/AP)

Repeating the story here at a town square in Port St. Lucie on Sunday, Romney affected many in the hushed crowd, with people responding differently. Some of the few thousand let out a sympathetic, "Ohhh"," in unison. But others seemed caught off guard by the sudden dark turn of Romney's story. "OHH!" one woman said, shooting a glance at her husband.

Romney's efforts to get personal were a stark difference for a candidate who has been deeply uncomfortable at times on the campaign trail when he's tried to connect with voters. It's an awkwardness that has hurt his bid for the presidency and allowed his Democratic opponents to define him as an aloof and uncaring rich guy who can't understand the struggles of average Americans.

During the primaries and for most of the general election, the Republican presidential nominee declined to respond to attacks calling attention to his personal wealth?in part because he was "embarrassed" and didn't like talking about money even with those closest to him, a Romney friend told Yahoo News.

It was a decision that damaged his standing with voters. A recent Reuters poll found Romney trailing President Barack Obama by 30 points on the question of which candidate voters like the best?a result that has been reflected in other polls for months.

But Romney aides believe last week's debate may offer a turning point for their candidate. After months of coming off as awkward and stiff at times on the stump, Romney was confident and commanding?but, perhaps most importantly, at ease as he faced off with his Democratic rival.

In a snap poll conducted after the event, CBS News found 63 percent of those surveyed believed Romney cared about their needs?a 30 point jump in polling conducted before the debate.

A senior Romney aide insisted the candidate had decided on his own to begin incorporating more personal stories into his stump speech. But as he did, Romney offered a little bit of spin to the transition?suggesting he's been the same guy all along, but it hasn't come through because of the media and its focus on "sound bites."

At rallies all over the state, Romney and his wife, Ann, praised last week's debate because it allowed the candidate to speak "unfiltered."

"I was so thrilled at the debate for people to see my husband unfiltered, without any negative ads, without any media trying to interpret what he says and what he feels in his heart," Ann Romney told supporters in St. Petersburg. "This is a man who cares about the American people. I've seen him throughout his life exhibit extraordinary compassion for others."

Wall St withstands jobs disappointment; focus on Fed

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks held steady at four-year highs o n F riday, closing out their best week since June as a sharply disappointing jobs report only fueled expectations that the Federal Reserve would act to stimulate the economy next week.

The S&P closed higher but strength in both the Dow and Nasdaq was limited by blue-chips Intel and Kraft, both of which warned on their profit outlooks.

The August nonfarm payrolls report showed job growth of only 96,000, well under the 125,000 expected. That added to hopes the Federal Reserve will announce additional stimulus after its policy meeting ends Thursday, but investors could be in a holding pattern until then.

"There's no way to sugarcoat how disappointing the jobs number was, and as it reinforces the view the economy is lagging, that puts more pressure on the Fed to act," said Joseph Tanious, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds in New York.

"I absolutely think stocks still have room to grow from here, but there will certainly be disappointment if we don't get direction from the Fed next week."

The expectations for central bank intervention, both from the Fed and the European Central Bank, has fueled a rally that took the S&P 500 to its highest level since January 2008 on Thursday and pushed the Nasdaq to a 12-year high.

The gains were fueled by the ECB's decision to launch a potentially unlimited bond-buying program to lower struggling euro zone countries' borrowing costs.

"This was a very bold and unorthodox move by the ECB, and it appears to be more important for stocks than the payroll report, another example of how Europe is impacting the U.S. with a vengeance," said Marco Priani, vice president at Advisory Research in Chicago, which has about $10 billion in assets.

Energy and financial shares were among the day's strongest, lifted as investors bought shares in areas tied to the pace of economic growth. ConocoPhillips rose 1.5 percent to $56.64 while Noble Energy rose 2.4 percent to $91.50. Bank of America surged 5.4 percent to $8.80.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended up 14.64 points, or 0.11 percent, at 13,306.64. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 5.80 points, or 0.40 percent, at 1,437.92. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 0.61 points, or 0.02 percent, at 3,136.42.

For the week, the S&P is up 2.2 percent while the Dow is up 1.6 percent and the Nasdaq is up 2.3 percent. It was the best week for the S&P and Nasdaq since June, and the best for the Dow since July.

Intel Corp cut its third-quarter revenue estimate and withdrew its full-year forecast, saying demand for its chips declined as customers reduced inventory and businesses bought fewer personal computers. Shares of the world's largest chipmaker fell 3.6 percent to $24.19 while the PHLX semiconductor index lost 0.8 percent.

Kraft Foods Inc gave earnings forecasts for the two companies it will split into next month that disappointed analysts. The stock, which like Intel is a Dow component, fell 5.5 percent to $39.99.

The jobs report showed the unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July, but it was largely due to Americans giving up the search for work.

Material shares were also among the strongest of the day after China approved $157 billion in infrastructure spending in a move to energize an economy that has recently shown signs of slowing. AK Steel Holding surged 7.6 percent to $5.78 while James River Coal added 5.3 percent to $2.76 and Alpha Natural Resources soared 17 percent to $6.90.

Shares of Pandora Media Inc fell 17 percent to $10.47 following media reports that Apple Inc was in talks to license music for a radio service like the one Pandora operates.

About 65 percent of companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange closed higher while 56 percent of Nasdaq shares ended higher.

Volume was light, with about 6.44 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, below last year's daily average of 7.84 billion.

Attempted murder charge for teen suspect in school shooting

(Reuters) - A 15-year-old boy suspected of shooting and critically wounding a fellow student on the first day of classes at a Baltimore high school has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, police said Tuesday.

Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. is being charged as an adult and also faces a first-degree assault charge stemming from Monday's shooting, according to Baltimore County Police Department spokeswoman Susan Hunt.

Hunt said Gladden, who is being held without bail, is cooperating with authorities. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 7.

The 17-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, remains in critical condition at the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma center. The extent of his injuries is not known.

The shooting took place just before 11 a.m. at Perry Hall High School, voted one of America's Best High Schools by Newsweek magazine in 2010, in suburban northeast Baltimore.

Police believe the attacker chose his victim at random, another police spokeswoman, Julia Hardgrove, said on Monday. She said several other students suffered minor injuries.

The suspect was tackled by faculty members and held until police arrived, officials said.

The shooting is the latest incident of gun violence in a summer plagued by troubling shootings in the United States.

In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. In August, a suspect described by authorities as a white supremacist killed six people outside a Sikh temple in Wisconsin before committing suicide.

The land of rare population because there are only a few places to be inhabited and they are castles in which only Blue Bloods live. There are tall mountains and endless pine forests as well as a large lake and some people have huts in which they stay in just for the hunting season.

The town in the forest mangrove. The people here have learned to live with nature as one and live peacefully, there is the top part of the town with homes and building that have been surrounded by trees and plants and then there is the under water part where you can see the roots of the trees reaching far to the bottom of the mangrove. Mostly Commoners live here with a few exceptions of Nobles and Misfits.

This is where the Academy is situated near. This land is a jungle with rivers that form large bodies of water on one side and on the other there is the sea with beaches and space to relax but in the middle of both there is the city of Tyrillia with a massive culture of foods, clothing and history. Nobles and Blue Bloods don't often come here becuase they say it is a much too 'wild' place to live in, but it's only because the people are very festive.

So, I had this idea...

I have this idea for a fairly small RP (I'm thinking max. of four people) and I was wondering if anyone would be interested. I was hoping it would appeal to boys and girls so it wouldn't be particularly one-gender heavy. So, is anyone interested?

The basic idea:

After a destructive drug turned a high percentage of the population into violent, powerful people, a large percentage of the UK was sectioned off, with the hope of containing it. Three years later, the Inside - as it became known - is a dangerous, lawless place.

More detail:

The population of the United Kingdom were addicted to drugs. Most are harmless and widely accepted, designed to calm people or bring their mood up (or down) for example, but three years ago scientists introduced a new drug called Ultimate. It was designed to enhance senses and physical power, as well as being pleasurable to the user. The government wanted to rush the trials, as the public were getting itchy to try Ultimate (as were the government officials), so human testing was cut down to just three months.

The first two months went fine. The drug worked as planned with no side effects, but during the third month of trials - a fortnight before the release date - the scientists noticed the chemical structure of the drug was changing. So sure that the drug would be successful, they?d already manufactured hundreds of boxes of the substance. They tested what had already been made and found the same problem: the chemical structure had evolved.

The original test subjects were fine (and the effects of the drug had long worn off), but the recent subjects and those that took the mutated drug, had heightened senses, heightened physical power, but also heightened personalities, particularly those with a tendency to be violent.

The scientists announced they?d no longer be releasing the drug and the public were furious. That night, hundreds of boxes of Ultimate were stolen from a warehouse. In an international panic, knowing that thousands of strong, violent people were about to spread into the public, they sectioned off a proportion of the United Kingdom.

The Inside ? as it became known ? was lost to chaos in the space of a few weeks. It was lawless, dangerous and just about destroyed.
Three years later, there are thousands of people still living in The Inside, fighting for survival in a gang-ruled land. People are still making all the drugs, including Ultimate, but there are rumours a new, permanent Ultimate it being made.

U.S. woman's altruism starts chain of five kidney swaps, extending lives

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A soon-to-be wed gay couple, a retired teacher and his wife, and two pairs of fathers and sons were among those whose lives were changed one extraordinary day this week when a 35-year-old single mother of four from North Carolina donated a kidney to a stranger in New York.

"I'm not losing nothing," Honica Brittman said this week, sitting in a blue and white hospital gown before surgery in which she would give, for free, the initial kidney in a chain of five kidney transplants at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

"To actually help somebody live a little bit, a lot longer, that's an awesome thing," she said.

Brittman, who decided to be part of the swap after learning she could not donate to a family friend because of incompatibility, represents what experts say is a critical and growing number of "altruistic" or "non-directed" donors, people willing to donate to anyone in need as long as their blood type, antigens and other factors are compatible.

The health dangers for kidney donors is believed to be low. The risk of death from the surgery is 1 in 1,700, according to the National Kidney Foundation, and life expectancy is said to be unchanged with one kidney.

High blood pressure is a possible side effect, and critics point out there is no systemic collection of national data on the risks associated with living kidney donations.

Experts say donors such as Brittman are key to helping the over 90,000 people awaiting a kidney transplant in the United States, according to the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

As in Brittman's case, donors can enable a chain of kidney exchanges that increases the number of people who can benefit from live kidney transplants, which typically last longer than cadaver kidneys.

The series of operation on Wednesday and Thursday, which required 10 separate surgical teams and weeks of coordination, was made up of a series of swaps within a group of men and women between the ages of 23 and 68 and with compatible blood types, all motivated by a mix of compassion and commitment to their loved ones.

The chain started with Brittman, who donated a kidney to a 39-year-old television producer whose fianc?e and partner of more than 10 years donated to a businessman from upstate New York.

In turn, the businessman's son, a college-age student who felt that for being healthy and the youngest of four sons, he should step up on behalf of his father and donate one of his kidneys to another young man, a 23-year-old originally from Haiti.

His father then donated to a retired teacher from New Jersey.

"CAN'T WAIT TO MEET THEM"

The operations took place in neighboring rooms with doctors simply walking from one room to another to deliver the small, plump vital organ from the donor to the recipient.

The chain that Brittman made possible ended on Thursday when a woman, the wife of the retired teacher, donated her kidney to another woman who had been waiting four years for a transplant.

"All this stems from the fact that this young woman ... wanted to donate a kidney purely altruistically without knowing any of the recipients," said Lloyd Ratner, a surgeon and director of renal and pancreatic transplantation at the hospital.

Brittman, by giving the first kidney, prevented any pair in the chain from having to donate a kidney before receiving one.

While there is no conclusive national data on the number of donors like Brittman, experts estimate they have increased to between 100 and 200 a year, up from just dozens a few years ago.

"After every chain that gets some publicity, there's a flood of potential donors contacting kidney exchange networks and individual transplant centers," Alvin Roth, an economics professor at the Harvard Business School said.

The chain was also made possible by the decision of another pair in the group to be part of it.

Adam Abernathy, the television producer, and his fianc?e Dave Ferguson, 43, could have done a simple transplant between them because Ferguson's blood type made him a universal donor.

But they decided to be part of a chain when it was proposed by the hospital that Ferguson donate his kidney to a man whose blood type had made him a harder match for a donor, A. Jamal, the businessman and father of four.

"We realized if we were in somebody else's shoes, we'd want someone to do the same," Ferguson said.

Most of the group said they plan to meet their donors after recovering from the operation.

"I can't wait to meet them," Brittman said.

Babies Toddler ? What Most Websites Are Badly ... - My Life Coach

Most parents (especially new ones) believe that everything there is to know about raising kids is pretty self explanatory but there are some new skills that every parent needs to learn. This is because nobody is perfect and there have to be at least a couple of areas of weakness that you can improve upon. The world changes every moment; for example, most of today?s generations of parents didn?t grow up online but they still have to carefully monitor their kids use of the internet to see how the online world affects them. Let?s look at some important parenting skills that all parents should possess.

We all already know how important it is to praise children but be conscious of how you go about this. Some parents aren?t good at praising their kids enough and others praise their children but not in a way that is helpful to the child. For instance, it is better to praise a child for making a real effort at something than it is to praise them for something that is out of their control. Praising a child for something that is inherent like intelligence, athleticism or attractiveness could be counterproductive in that it could build up some vanity and arrogance. On the other hand, praising a child for working hard at sports or plays or homework is just encouragement to continue doing their best. Every parent worries about keeping his or her child safe but he or she must also realize that there is no way to watch that child every second of every day. That?s why its vital for you to give them the information they need
to get started as well as make sure that they know how to get to you or another adult who can help them if they need it. As soon you think your child will be able to retain the information take steps to make sure that she or he knows her or his full name, address and phone number. They should also know how to reach you at either home or work. You might think about providing a cell phone for emergencies only to your child so that he can call either you or 911 if he needs help. There are lots of cell phone carriers who have created plans just for these purposes. If there is a friend or relative who can get to your child faster than you could in an emergency make sure that your child understands how to reach that person.

Every parent has parenting styles that feel natural to them but sometimes those styles need to be modified especially if you tend to swing from extreme to extreme. Parents, for example, who are rigid and authoritarian are typically reflecting the style in which they were brought up. Today, though, kids need to be taught to think for themselves and if you are too strict this won?t happen, your kids will either be extremely docile or extremely rebellious. At the opposite end of the spectrum however there are problems too; kids who grow up in environments that are too permissive often lack boundaries and self discipline later on.

Science has shown that the most successful parenting style is something called ?authoritative parenting? which is kind of a compromise between permissive and authoritarian. Lots of parenting skills help your child develop properly and allow you to nip problems in the bud before they get out of control. There is an art to being a good parent and you will always have something to learn whether it is how to teach your children to be self reliant or proper discipline application or even ways to get involved at your child?s school.

Autumn Sky Ranch: Ranch Dog

Autumn Sky Ranch: Ranch Dog

Ranch Dog

One of our dogs is an Aussie, or Australian Shepherd to be more formal. ? I was told she is from a line of working dogs, not the more fluffy show dog type that I often see. ? She is busy busy busy. ? It's just a shame we don't have animals that need to be tended or herded. ? When she was a puppy, she was a lunatic. ? No other word for it. ? I wasn't sure I could be her only companion so I brought home another puppy. ? He is an Aussie/Golden cross. ? He is much calmer and has to endure being the target of her natural herding instincts. ? She is smarter than any dog I've ever had. ? You might fool her once but you will NEVER fool her twice. ? She anticipates, strategizes, keep track of every one and every thing, and tries to stay a step ahead of the pack at all times. ? But she will collapse into a sweet submissive dog for attention and petting, hoping you will stay there with her all day. ? When she wants attention, she will bump your leg with her pointy nose. ? Over and over and over, until you reach down and pet her. ? Loving and loyal forever.

Erik came into our lives and nicknamed her The Bullet. ? As with herding dogs, she can go from your side, head out to the back of the property, turn and make it back to your side....lickety split. ? She is loyal to us and to our property. ? She barks too much but does her best to keep critters and garbage trucks away from our place. ? She smiles. ? The groomers love her because of her sweet nature...and her smile. ? And now she has taken up howling. ? When the donkeys holler out, she howls along with them. ??

This is our sweet and busy girl. ? We love her very much.

Police: Cal Ripken's mom abducted, now safe

(AP) ? The 74-year-old mother of Hall of Fame infielder Cal Ripken was safe Wednesday, a day after an armed man abducted her from her home northeast of Baltimore, police said.

Vi Ripken was kidnapped between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday by a man who forced her into her car, according to Aberdeen police. She was found about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday unharmed in her car near her home in Aberdeen, some 25 miles from Baltimore.

Ripken earned the nickname "Iron Man" for playing in 2,632 consecutive games during his 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles and is a hero to many baseball fans.

Vi Ripken described her abductor as a tall, thin white man with glasses, but police spokesman Lt. Fred Budnick had no other details.

"This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy," the Ripken family said in a statement said. "We want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially all of the law enforcement agencies that worked so hard and quickly."

The family said that it could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.
