Babies Toddler ? What Most Websites Are Badly ... - My Life Coach

Most parents (especially new ones) believe that everything there is to know about raising kids is pretty self explanatory but there are some new skills that every parent needs to learn. This is because nobody is perfect and there have to be at least a couple of areas of weakness that you can improve upon. The world changes every moment; for example, most of today?s generations of parents didn?t grow up online but they still have to carefully monitor their kids use of the internet to see how the online world affects them. Let?s look at some important parenting skills that all parents should possess.

We all already know how important it is to praise children but be conscious of how you go about this. Some parents aren?t good at praising their kids enough and others praise their children but not in a way that is helpful to the child. For instance, it is better to praise a child for making a real effort at something than it is to praise them for something that is out of their control. Praising a child for something that is inherent like intelligence, athleticism or attractiveness could be counterproductive in that it could build up some vanity and arrogance. On the other hand, praising a child for working hard at sports or plays or homework is just encouragement to continue doing their best. Every parent worries about keeping his or her child safe but he or she must also realize that there is no way to watch that child every second of every day. That?s why its vital for you to give them the information they need
to get started as well as make sure that they know how to get to you or another adult who can help them if they need it. As soon you think your child will be able to retain the information take steps to make sure that she or he knows her or his full name, address and phone number. They should also know how to reach you at either home or work. You might think about providing a cell phone for emergencies only to your child so that he can call either you or 911 if he needs help. There are lots of cell phone carriers who have created plans just for these purposes. If there is a friend or relative who can get to your child faster than you could in an emergency make sure that your child understands how to reach that person.

Every parent has parenting styles that feel natural to them but sometimes those styles need to be modified especially if you tend to swing from extreme to extreme. Parents, for example, who are rigid and authoritarian are typically reflecting the style in which they were brought up. Today, though, kids need to be taught to think for themselves and if you are too strict this won?t happen, your kids will either be extremely docile or extremely rebellious. At the opposite end of the spectrum however there are problems too; kids who grow up in environments that are too permissive often lack boundaries and self discipline later on.

Science has shown that the most successful parenting style is something called ?authoritative parenting? which is kind of a compromise between permissive and authoritarian. Lots of parenting skills help your child develop properly and allow you to nip problems in the bud before they get out of control. There is an art to being a good parent and you will always have something to learn whether it is how to teach your children to be self reliant or proper discipline application or even ways to get involved at your child?s school.

Autumn Sky Ranch: Ranch Dog

Autumn Sky Ranch: Ranch Dog

Ranch Dog

One of our dogs is an Aussie, or Australian Shepherd to be more formal. ? I was told she is from a line of working dogs, not the more fluffy show dog type that I often see. ? She is busy busy busy. ? It's just a shame we don't have animals that need to be tended or herded. ? When she was a puppy, she was a lunatic. ? No other word for it. ? I wasn't sure I could be her only companion so I brought home another puppy. ? He is an Aussie/Golden cross. ? He is much calmer and has to endure being the target of her natural herding instincts. ? She is smarter than any dog I've ever had. ? You might fool her once but you will NEVER fool her twice. ? She anticipates, strategizes, keep track of every one and every thing, and tries to stay a step ahead of the pack at all times. ? But she will collapse into a sweet submissive dog for attention and petting, hoping you will stay there with her all day. ? When she wants attention, she will bump your leg with her pointy nose. ? Over and over and over, until you reach down and pet her. ? Loving and loyal forever.

Erik came into our lives and nicknamed her The Bullet. ? As with herding dogs, she can go from your side, head out to the back of the property, turn and make it back to your side....lickety split. ? She is loyal to us and to our property. ? She barks too much but does her best to keep critters and garbage trucks away from our place. ? She smiles. ? The groomers love her because of her sweet nature...and her smile. ? And now she has taken up howling. ? When the donkeys holler out, she howls along with them. ??

This is our sweet and busy girl. ? We love her very much.

Police: Cal Ripken's mom abducted, now safe

(AP) ? The 74-year-old mother of Hall of Fame infielder Cal Ripken was safe Wednesday, a day after an armed man abducted her from her home northeast of Baltimore, police said.

Vi Ripken was kidnapped between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday by a man who forced her into her car, according to Aberdeen police. She was found about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday unharmed in her car near her home in Aberdeen, some 25 miles from Baltimore.

Ripken earned the nickname "Iron Man" for playing in 2,632 consecutive games during his 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles and is a hero to many baseball fans.

Vi Ripken described her abductor as a tall, thin white man with glasses, but police spokesman Lt. Fred Budnick had no other details.

"This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy," the Ripken family said in a statement said. "We want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially all of the law enforcement agencies that worked so hard and quickly."

The family said that it could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.

Choosing The Right Lease Is Important In Commercial Real Estate ...

There are both positive and negative aspects of commercial real estate. You might make a lot of money or you might lose a lot, too. You should be wise about the particular properties you invest in, as well as how exactly you go about securing the resources to buy them. This article will help you get the most from your real estate investment.

When interviewing potential brokers, ask them to tell you about their experience level with the type of commercial investments you are interested in. Make sure you know that they actually specialize within the area you plan on selling and buying. You and this broker should enter into an agreement that is exclusive.

Line up as many financial partners as you can, including family, friends, and professional lenders, so that you always have the money to get in on a great deal. Have written contracts drafted by a lawyer so that you?re protected in any situation. There are two repayment options: paying it off at a certain interest rate, or paying due to profit.

Visit the commercial real estate properties that you are interested in. It?s a good idea to hire a building contractor to come with you and do on-the-spot inspections of properties you are considering. Set the stage for future negotiations by putting forth the preliminary proposals. Consider counteroffers carefully prior to responding.

TIP! An important component to your commercial investment is determining your rental allocation strategies. Have a price in mind before beginning discussions with possible lessees.

Determine what the company you are working with considers a good placement. How do they determine the space requirements? What is their property selection criteria? How do they negotiate? This and many other little details will all affect your dealings. You can benefit a lot if you know things like this.

Assess what you need before you look for commercial properties. Write down everything you need in a commercial property, such as number of conference rooms, offices, restrooms and how much square footage.

Determine the negotiation methods of real estate brokers you are considering. Much like you would interview a prospective employee, question their experience and training. In addition, you should ensure that the methods they employ are ethical and that they know how to go about obtaining the best deals. Go ahead and ask them for examples of any past negotiations, including those that were successful and those that were failures.

Always be in a position to understand, and move on a deal that is beneficial to you. Veterans in the commercial real estate market can spot a lucrative deal very quickly. One of their tools to success is always having an exit strategy. This allows them to opt out of a deal if it doesn?t meet their criteria. They also have an eye for repairs, are good at calculating risk, and they are good at knowing when their financial goals align with the properties in question.

TIP! Watch out for very motivated sellers. You have to find them, especially the ones who are eager enough to sell below market value.

Maintaining a regularly updated blog can make you appear more authoritative. This is a good way to attract potential buyers and tenants.

As previously stated, commercial real estate isn?t a slam dunk. It takes effort, time, and a lot of money (initially) to be successful. Even with the best laid plans, your efforts might lead to

(AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

(AP) ? Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, said Tuesday that the weak global economy is slowing its growth, and revenue for the current quarter is likely to come in below Wall Street forecasts.

Intel's second-quarter net income was $2.83 billion, or 54 cents per share. That was down 4.3 percent from $2.95 billion, or 54 cents per share, a year earlier, as operating expenses rose faster than revenue. Intel has been buying back shares, accounting for the flat earnings per share.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of 52 cents per share for the latest quarter.

Revenue rose 3.6 percent to $13.5 billion. Analysts were expecting $13.54 billion.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company says it expects $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion in third-quarter revenue, with a midpoint of $14.3 billion, below the analyst forecast of $14.6 billion.

"As we enter the third quarter, our growth will be slower than we anticipated due to a more challenging macroeconomic environment," CEO Paul Otellini said in a statement.

After the release of results, Intel's stock fell 8 cents to $25.30 in extended trading. During the regular session, it gained 25 cents, or 1 percent, to close at $25.38.

Christie's shows how traditional businesses can adapt to online ...

Venerable 246 year old auction house Christie?s will in three weeks time launch its first exclusively online auction. ?As a way of doing business, online-only sales are a very natural progression that provides our clients with even more opportunities to build and broaden their collections,? says Vice President Scott Torrence.

The firm has been greatly encouraged by the success of the online portion of their Collection of Elizabeth Taylor auction, which brought in a total of $9.5 million ? dramatically exceeding the $1 million estimate. An online charity auction of Hermes handbags also exceeded expectations by raising over $200, 000. ?The success of these two pilots demonstrates our clients around the world are eagerly embracing online-only sales as a regular addition to Christie?s calendar of traditional live auctions,? says CEO Steven Murphy.

Christie?s is by no means a newcomer to the online world. The auction house already webcasts many of their live auctions onto the Internet, giving Internet users the opportunity to participate. The firm has even introduced iPhone and iPad apps. Other prestigious auction houses such as Bonham?s and Sotheby?s have also entered into e-commerce.

There has been a huge move towards buying online in recent years, and the traditional auction world and art & antiques business are no exception. Although traditional buyers were at first uncertain, they have become increasingly at ease with online auctions. Online auctions make it easy for consumers with little industry knowledge to find and purchase goods, and tend to attract more young or first-time buyers than offline art and antiques sales.

So far live auction webcasting appears to be the dominant form of dedicated online art and antiques auctioning. However, exclusively online art and antiques auctions are rising in popularity. This new step by Christie?s signals a promising future and shows how even the most traditional of businesses can adapt to the online world.

Online-only auctions offer numerous benefits over live auctions. They are more cost-effective and require less preparation, and thus can run more frequently. They run for longer periods of time and reach a wider audience ? both of which increase revenue. With regards to live auction webcasting specifically, online-only auctions have the advantage of bidders being certain of what is going on in the auction ? there is no need to be concerned about any potential time lags between live bidding and Internet bidding.

The art and antiques market appears to be little affected by the current economic climate, and is indeed thriving. Therefore, now is an ideal time to branch out into online sales. Online auctions need not take the place of your company?s offline sales, but could instead be an additional offering to your established traditional live auctions. The online expansion of prestigious auction houses such as Christie?s has greatly improved the public perception of online art and antiques auctions and we hope to see this area of online auctioning continue to flourish.

You can read about the auction software packages we can offer here.

What Do We Do Next? ? Girls Have Special Retirement Planning ...

Converting retirement goals in to reality could be challenging-especially for unique, gender-specific difficulties must be often overcome by women, who to reach economic security. These issues contain longer life expectancies and lower average earnings, infant custody and support, elder care than men. This series of articles explores these particular gender-based issues to aid women become better informed about retirement and financial planning. As more women have entered the workforce and their pay goes toward equality with men, women today have more opportunities to invest and save for retirement. But merely increasing women?s economic strength will not always result in a higher quality of personal retirement planning, greater participation in retirement plans, a rate of savings or better investing. The details tell the story:oWomen stay longer-Statistically, females outlive males by an of about five years. That suggests they will have to save more because they will have more years of retirement to fund.oWomen save less-The women?s typical contribution rate is a few months vs. 2 months for men, based on the Ninth Annual Transamerica Small Business Retirement Survey (September 2008), although the savings rate for both men and women falls short of the minimum recommended 10%. Only 10% of the women surveyed reported family retirement savings totaling over $100,000, compared to 29% of men.oWomen start saving later-Women hang retirement saving later in life than men, so they have less years to accumulate a retirement home egg.oWomen have less to invest-Generally, women have less to invest since, typically, they make less than men.The poverty rate for all aged women is 13% according to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2008. However, the University of Michigan Retirement Research Center (May possibly 2003) discovered that for widows, never-married and separated women, the rate jumps to over 18%. Too many depend on Social Security as their main source of income.Next, you?ll learn more about the pay differential between men and women-one of the key economic problems facing women as they policy for the future.Women save less because they earn lessDespite important accomplishments in the office, many women are still at a disadvantage when it comes to generating power. Regardless of what measure is used, women?s profits normally remain below those obtained by men.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the mean earnings of full-time male workers was $43,460 in 2007. By the same measure, the average income for women was $33,437. However the gap between women?s and men?s earnings closed somewhat. In 2007, the female-to-male earnings ratio was 0.78-higher than the previous all-time-high of 0.76, first recorded in 2001.Various factors contribute to these earnings differences:oWomen?s careers are interrupted more frequently for childbirth, childcare or elderly parent care. oEven women who gain entry in to high-paying jobs could be at the mercy of these demands punctually and attention. More women are typically applied by osmaller businesses with smaller payrolls than men. oFewer women than men are union members. oMore women than men choose not to work outside the home. For these reasons, it may be especially significant for women to become informed about retirement and financial planning programs-and to take part in employer-sponsored retirement plans.Next, we will discuss the aggressive requirements that several working women face-and often experience alone: the treatment of children and elderly parents. The difficulties of providing child and parent careWomen?s traditional role as caregivers for both children and elderly relatives often enforce specific financial struggles and make it difficult to put aside income for the future. This is especially true for women who are custodial parents, determined by child support obligations that might or mightn?t be forthcoming. In line with the 2005 edition of Son or daughter Support for Custodial Fathers and Mothers, an U.S. Census Bureau report, around 13.6 million parents had custody of children under 21 years of age. And five of each six custodial parents were women.Custodial parents are more likely than fathers to work in your free time and have the maximum requirement for child support. Nevertheless, the Census Bureau study found that among the more than 11 million custodial mothers, only 2.9 million were receiving the entire quantity of their court-ordered child support obligations. Obviously, the unsupplemented problem of child and home help comes more regularly to women with single incomes-a undeniable fact that might have a damaging impact on retirement-planning efforts.Caring for the elderlyNearly one in four of the nation?s families is involved in caregiving to family members or friends aged 50 or older. And about 75% of those caregivers are women. (Source: 101 Facts on the Status of Workingwomen, revealed in 2005 by the Business and Professional Women?s Foundation). The BPWF report also said that 27% of all caregivers are children of those receiving the care, and that female caregivers spend 50% more time giving care than male caregivers.Further, according to the BPWF, used caregivers are more likely to skip work, lose employment or career opportunity or experience other bad economic effects. And then there is the direct economic impact. Seniors living on a fixed income can have more trouble paying electricity bills, health-related deductibles, nursing home bills or home health fees. When the aged parent goes a little small, the caregiver might be required to constitute the deficiency. Again, this can reduce the volume available to save for retirement. What women can do to prepare for the futureFinancial planning starts with becoming informed about key economic issues. That is not as difficult as it may appear, because it just takes time to learn up on funds in tons of personal financial management books and journals on the market. These magazines describe the pros and cons of investments such as mutual funds, variable annuities, certificates of deposit (CDs), money market funds and other investments savings applications such as workplace retirement programs and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and the idea of risk management through life and long-term treatment insurance.Next, attain a knowledge of money management. This involves tracking your checkbook, identifying where your money goes every month, and finding approaches to minimize these outflows if they exceed your income. Budgeting is the most essential, most efficient way to sort out balance income and outgo, establish charges that need to be lowered and give a structure for controlling your finances. Now is the time to start applying the five-step retirement-planning process:oSet targets oAnalyze present budget oDevelop techniques oChoose particular investment alternatives oEvaluate and followup on your planThis approach can help you determine how much money you?ll need at retirement and make decisions about how to start acquiring that money. Obama tax-cut plan: easing risk of 'fiscal cliff'?

Not extending the Bush-era tax cuts for the rich could cut the federal deficit by $81 billion in 2013, but it could also damage the economy by reining in spending by the highest-earning Americans.

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / July 9, 2012

President Obama greets event participants Monday at the White House after renewing his proposal to extend tax cuts for the middle class.

President Obama didn't use the word "fiscal cliff" Monday when he proposed extending middle-class tax cuts, but his proposal relates directly to the fears embodied in that phrase.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The so-called cliff is this: Under current law, the scheduled expiration of?major tax breaks at year end raises worries that the nation could be pushed back into recession as millions of consumers simultaneously get hit with higher federal taxes.

The president urged that Congress act now to keep the Bush-era tax cuts in place for about 98 percent of Americans for 2013. But he would allow the Bush-era tax cuts on higher-earning Americans to expire. The plan fits with Mr. Obama's longstanding views on tax policies, and with his election-year strategy of casting himself as for the "middle class" and Republicans as for "the rich."

But, if enacted, it would also have big implications for the trajectory of federal deficits ? and for the risk of a recession induced by those expiring tax breaks.

Essentially, Obama is proposing to turn that dreaded economic cliff into more of a gradual slope.

Taxes would still go up for families earning more than $250,000. The White House estimates that, by bringing in more revenue, this would shrink the federal deficit by some $83 billion in 2013.

But economists generally say the move, by taking spending power out of the hands of high-earning Americans, would also dent current economic activity. For reference, that $83 billion equals about half a percent of America's gross domestic product, or GDP.

Forecasters don't believe the hit to GDP would be precisely that size. What they do say is that, if all the currently scheduled tax-cut expirations occur on Dec. 31, a new recession is a very real threat.

A government report Friday showed only tepid job growth in June, highlighting the economy's fragility and its importance in the election campaign.

Obama's proposal on continued tax cuts for the middle class would reduce the overall size of what some analysts have dubbed "taxmageddon." Keeping those cuts in place would push up the 2013 federal deficit by some $108 billion, Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation has estimated. In turn, that leaves more money in consumers' hands, reducing the size of the cliff that might damage economic growth.

Obama threw down a challenge to Republicans: "Let's agree to do what we agree on," he said, for the good of the economy. Both parties have embraced the idea of keeping tax rates low for most Americans. Obama said the two sides should act on that idea, for 2013 at least, and then debate their differences on policy toward the rich during the election campaign.

Some economists, including Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, say the economy requires a two-part fiscal strategy. First, avoid the full-scale cliff of tax hikes and scheduled federal spending cuts, to stave off a possible recession. Second, put the federal budget toward more stable footing for the long term, such as by imposing spending restraint that kicks in gradually, as well as by reforming the tax code.

The Obama plan for middle-class tax cuts is not a full-fledged fiscal plan. But economists on the left argues that it's better than doing nothing. Continuing the middle-class tax breaks could mitigate the recession risk. Meanwhile, allowing tax rates to rise on well-to-do Americans could reduce federal deficits significantly. It would bring in $829 billion extra revenue during the next decade, according to the liberal Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) in Washington.

Without that tax revenue, the government would face pressure to make deeper spending cuts to get its fiscal house in order.

In making his appeal, Obama differed with some in his own party. House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D) of California, for example, would keep Bush-era tax rates in place for those earning up to $1 million.

But bumping the tax-hike threshold upward from Obama's target of $250,000 in income would cost the government a lot of revenue.

"House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's proposal to extend President Bush's income tax cuts for households making up to $1 million a year would lose nearly half of the revenue that President Obama's proposal ... would raise," according to a CBPP report.

Artificial cerebellum than enables robotic human-like object handling developed

ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? University of Granada researchers have developed an artificial cerebellum (a biologically-inspired adaptive microcircuit) that controls a robotic arm with human-like precision. The cerebellum is the part of the human brain that controls the locomotor system and coordinates body movements.

To date, although robot designers have achieved very precise movements, such movements are performed at very high speed, require strong forces and are power consuming. This approach cannot be applied to robots that interact with humans, as a malfunction might be potentially dangerous.

To solve this challenge, University of Granada researchers have implemented a new cerebellar spiking model that adapts to corrections and stores their sensorial effects; in addition, it records motor commands to predict the action or movement to be performed by the robotic arm. This cerebellar model allows the user to articulate a state-of-the-art robotic arm with extraordinary mobility.

Automatic Learning

The developers of the new cerebellar model have obtained a robot that performs automatic learning by extracting the input layer functionalities of the brain cortex. Furthermore, they have developed two control systems that enable accurate and robust control of the robotic arm during object handling.

The synergy between the cerebellum and the automatic control system enables robot's adaptability to changing conditions i.e. the robot can interact with humans. The biologically-inspired architectures used in this model combine the error training approach with predictive adaptive control.

The designers of this model are Silvia Tolu, Jes?s Garrido and Eduardo Ros Vidal, at the University of Granada Department of Computer Architecture and Technology, and the University of Almer?a researcher Richard Carrillo.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From North Carolina to New Jersey, nearly 1.8 million people still without electricity were asking the same question Monday evening: Why will it take so long to get the lights back on?

Nearly three full days after a severe summer storm lashed the East Coast, utilities warned that many neighborhoods could remain in the dark for much of the week, if not beyond.

Friday's storm arrived with little warning and knocked out power to 3 million homes and businesses, so utility companies have had to wait days for extra crews traveling from as far away as Quebec and Oklahoma. And the toppled trees and power lines often entangled broken equipment in debris that must be removed before workers can even get started.

Adding to the urgency of the repairs are the sick and elderly, who are especially vulnerable without air conditioning in the sweltering triple-digit heat. Many sought refuge in hotels or basements.

Officials feared the death toll, already at 22, could climb because of the heat and widespread use of generators, which emit fumes that can be dangerous in enclosed spaces.

At the Springvale Terrace nursing home and senior center in Silver Spring, Md., generators were brought in to provide electricity, and air-conditioning units were installed in windows in large common rooms to offer respite from the heat and darkness.

Residents using walkers struggled to navigate doors that were supposed to open automatically. Nurses had to throw out spoiled food, sometimes over the loud objections of residents who insisted their melting ice cream was still good.

The lack of power completely upended many daily routines. Supermarkets struggled to keep groceries from going bad. People on perishable medication called pharmacies to see how long their medicine would keep. In Washington, officials set up collection sites for people to drop off rotting food. Others held weekend cookouts in an attempt to use their food while it lasted. And in West Virginia, National Guard troops handed out food and water and made door-to-door checks.

When it comes to getting the power running again, all utilities take a top-down approach that seeks to get the largest number of people back online as quickly as possible.

First, crews repair substations that send power to thousands of homes and businesses. Next, they fix distribution lines. Last are the transformers that can restore power to a few customers at a time.

In Great Falls, Va., just outside Washington, patent attorney Patrick Muir found out firsthand who was high on the priority list. The area is sparsely populated and wealthy, with mansions spread across secluded, wooded lots. Muir had been raiding water bottles from his powerless office to supply his home, which is on a well that was not working. His 8-year-old daughter spoke hopefully of a beach trip to escape the heat. Dad said it was under consideration.

"Great Falls always seems to be the first to go down and the last one to come back up," Muir said.

A Safeway supermarket trying to stay open with a limited power supply handed out free bags of dry ice. But after two days of temperatures in the 90s, the air inside was stale. Shopping carts with spoiled food, buzzing with flies, sat outside the store.

At a CVS pharmacy, Mahesh Tickle did the best he could. He had no cash register, so he made change with loose bills and coins stuffed inside a Ziploc bag. Tickle filled what prescriptions he could and fielded questions from customers wondering if medications such as insulin had spoiled.

Some people said the destruction over the weekend was reminiscent of that caused by Tropical Storm Isabel in 2003 and Hurricane Irene in 2011.

Some backup utility crews arrived Sunday in Maryland, but many were not expected until sometime Monday. That's because the storm arrived so quickly, unlike hurricanes, which typically approach with several days of warning and give out-of-state crews plenty of time to get into place.

After Isabel, it took electricity supplier Pepco eight days to restore power to most of the 500,000-plus customers in Washington and the surrounding areas. About 443,000 lost power at the peak of this storm, and restoration work will likely last into the weekend.

Last year, it took Baltimore Gas and Electric company eight and a half days to restore power to all 750,000 customers who lost power during Hurricane Irene. This time, the power company initially confronted more than 600,000 people without power. It said restoration efforts will extend into the weekend.

BGE said in a letter posted on its website that it would take hundreds of thousands of man-hours to clear debris and work through outages. Crews are working around the clock in 16-hour shifts.

"This type of widespread, extensive damage also complicates our ability to quickly provide accurate restoration times, especially when original damage assessments are revised upon closer inspection of the work required," the letter said.

Some customers were getting impatient Monday.

"This has happened time after time and year after year, and it seems as if they're always unprepared," said John Murphy, a professional chauffeur from Burtonsville, Md., who was waiting for Pepco to restore power Monday to the homes of himself and his mother and sister, who live nearby. "The new neighborhoods are designed with underground power lines but the old neighborhoods, they don't want to spend the money to put them underground."

Utility workers restored a steady electricity flow to Leslie Saltsman's home in Potomac on Monday afternoon. But the enormous cherry tree blocking her driveway won't be removed until later this week.

Saltsman, a nurse who takes care of her elderly mother, watched as linemen in a bucket truck repaired cables above streets lined with piles of tree branches and trunk sections. She said she was irritated by the heat but not by Pepco.

"They're doing as much as they can," she said. "I'm not frustrated with the power company at all."

However, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley has been blunt that the utilities must work faster: "No one will have his boot further up Pepco's and BGE's backsides than I will," O'Malley said Sunday.

Pepco spokeswoman Myra Oppel said the differences between storms can be significant. Two storms could have the same number of customers with outages, but the root of the problem could be downed wires in one situation and downed poles in another. But repairing poles takes a lot longer.

As a result, the length of time it takes to restore power "depends on what damage has occurred, not the number of outages," Oppel said.

In the case of Friday night's storms, crews are contending with trees that have to be removed before crews can get to damaged infrastructure.

She said the fact that neighboring states were also hard-hit meant many utilities were competing to get the same backup crews for help.

In Baltimore County, Eveena Felder, a registered nurse, had been relying on air-conditioned public areas to keep cool during the day and a fan to help her family sleep.

"We've purchased a ton of batteries, that's where most of our money has gone," Felder said. "Turn the fan on and keep still, don't move, less energy."

Officials were especially concerned about people in isolated rural areas, such as Greenbrier County, W.Va.

"They have no radio station. They have no TV station. They have no communications because without power, they don't have phones," said Lt. Col. David Lester of the West Virginia National Guard.

Back at the nursing home, the cable was out as well, so in the common rooms with generator power the center played movies on old VHS tapes, including the 1932 classic "Grand Hotel."

Margaret Foster and Helen Ofsharick, 93 and 95 respectively, passed the time outside.

"You wouldn't want to live this way more than a day or so," Foster said. "There are sick people here, or people who don't think too well. They need help."

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
