Attempted murder charge for teen suspect in school shooting

(Reuters) - A 15-year-old boy suspected of shooting and critically wounding a fellow student on the first day of classes at a Baltimore high school has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, police said Tuesday.

Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. is being charged as an adult and also faces a first-degree assault charge stemming from Monday's shooting, according to Baltimore County Police Department spokeswoman Susan Hunt.

Hunt said Gladden, who is being held without bail, is cooperating with authorities. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 7.

The 17-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, remains in critical condition at the University of Maryland's Shock Trauma center. The extent of his injuries is not known.

The shooting took place just before 11 a.m. at Perry Hall High School, voted one of America's Best High Schools by Newsweek magazine in 2010, in suburban northeast Baltimore.

Police believe the attacker chose his victim at random, another police spokeswoman, Julia Hardgrove, said on Monday. She said several other students suffered minor injuries.

The suspect was tackled by faculty members and held until police arrived, officials said.

The shooting is the latest incident of gun violence in a summer plagued by troubling shootings in the United States.

In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. In August, a suspect described by authorities as a white supremacist killed six people outside a Sikh temple in Wisconsin before committing suicide.

It is the central city where the rich and wealthy live at the top and the poor and homeless struggle and fight at the bottom in the rat rotting pungent sewers.

The land of rare population because there are only a few places to be inhabited and they are castles in which only Blue Bloods live. There are tall mountains and endless pine forests as well as a large lake and some people have huts in which they stay in just for the hunting season.

The town in the forest mangrove. The people here have learned to live with nature as one and live peacefully, there is the top part of the town with homes and building that have been surrounded by trees and plants and then there is the under water part where you can see the roots of the trees reaching far to the bottom of the mangrove. Mostly Commoners live here with a few exceptions of Nobles and Misfits.

This is where the Academy is situated near. This land is a jungle with rivers that form large bodies of water on one side and on the other there is the sea with beaches and space to relax but in the middle of both there is the city of Tyrillia with a massive culture of foods, clothing and history. Nobles and Blue Bloods don't often come here becuase they say it is a much too 'wild' place to live in, but it's only because the people are very festive.

So, I had this idea...

I have this idea for a fairly small RP (I'm thinking max. of four people) and I was wondering if anyone would be interested. I was hoping it would appeal to boys and girls so it wouldn't be particularly one-gender heavy. So, is anyone interested?

The basic idea:

After a destructive drug turned a high percentage of the population into violent, powerful people, a large percentage of the UK was sectioned off, with the hope of containing it. Three years later, the Inside - as it became known - is a dangerous, lawless place.

More detail:

The population of the United Kingdom were addicted to drugs. Most are harmless and widely accepted, designed to calm people or bring their mood up (or down) for example, but three years ago scientists introduced a new drug called Ultimate. It was designed to enhance senses and physical power, as well as being pleasurable to the user. The government wanted to rush the trials, as the public were getting itchy to try Ultimate (as were the government officials), so human testing was cut down to just three months.

The first two months went fine. The drug worked as planned with no side effects, but during the third month of trials - a fortnight before the release date - the scientists noticed the chemical structure of the drug was changing. So sure that the drug would be successful, they?d already manufactured hundreds of boxes of the substance. They tested what had already been made and found the same problem: the chemical structure had evolved.

The original test subjects were fine (and the effects of the drug had long worn off), but the recent subjects and those that took the mutated drug, had heightened senses, heightened physical power, but also heightened personalities, particularly those with a tendency to be violent.

The scientists announced they?d no longer be releasing the drug and the public were furious. That night, hundreds of boxes of Ultimate were stolen from a warehouse. In an international panic, knowing that thousands of strong, violent people were about to spread into the public, they sectioned off a proportion of the United Kingdom.

The Inside ? as it became known ? was lost to chaos in the space of a few weeks. It was lawless, dangerous and just about destroyed.
Three years later, there are thousands of people still living in The Inside, fighting for survival in a gang-ruled land. People are still making all the drugs, including Ultimate, but there are rumours a new, permanent Ultimate it being made.

U.S. woman's altruism starts chain of five kidney swaps, extending lives

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A soon-to-be wed gay couple, a retired teacher and his wife, and two pairs of fathers and sons were among those whose lives were changed one extraordinary day this week when a 35-year-old single mother of four from North Carolina donated a kidney to a stranger in New York.

"I'm not losing nothing," Honica Brittman said this week, sitting in a blue and white hospital gown before surgery in which she would give, for free, the initial kidney in a chain of five kidney transplants at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

"To actually help somebody live a little bit, a lot longer, that's an awesome thing," she said.

Brittman, who decided to be part of the swap after learning she could not donate to a family friend because of incompatibility, represents what experts say is a critical and growing number of "altruistic" or "non-directed" donors, people willing to donate to anyone in need as long as their blood type, antigens and other factors are compatible.

The health dangers for kidney donors is believed to be low. The risk of death from the surgery is 1 in 1,700, according to the National Kidney Foundation, and life expectancy is said to be unchanged with one kidney.

High blood pressure is a possible side effect, and critics point out there is no systemic collection of national data on the risks associated with living kidney donations.

Experts say donors such as Brittman are key to helping the over 90,000 people awaiting a kidney transplant in the United States, according to the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

As in Brittman's case, donors can enable a chain of kidney exchanges that increases the number of people who can benefit from live kidney transplants, which typically last longer than cadaver kidneys.

The series of operation on Wednesday and Thursday, which required 10 separate surgical teams and weeks of coordination, was made up of a series of swaps within a group of men and women between the ages of 23 and 68 and with compatible blood types, all motivated by a mix of compassion and commitment to their loved ones.

The chain started with Brittman, who donated a kidney to a 39-year-old television producer whose fianc?e and partner of more than 10 years donated to a businessman from upstate New York.

In turn, the businessman's son, a college-age student who felt that for being healthy and the youngest of four sons, he should step up on behalf of his father and donate one of his kidneys to another young man, a 23-year-old originally from Haiti.

His father then donated to a retired teacher from New Jersey.

"CAN'T WAIT TO MEET THEM"

The operations took place in neighboring rooms with doctors simply walking from one room to another to deliver the small, plump vital organ from the donor to the recipient.

The chain that Brittman made possible ended on Thursday when a woman, the wife of the retired teacher, donated her kidney to another woman who had been waiting four years for a transplant.

"All this stems from the fact that this young woman ... wanted to donate a kidney purely altruistically without knowing any of the recipients," said Lloyd Ratner, a surgeon and director of renal and pancreatic transplantation at the hospital.

Brittman, by giving the first kidney, prevented any pair in the chain from having to donate a kidney before receiving one.

While there is no conclusive national data on the number of donors like Brittman, experts estimate they have increased to between 100 and 200 a year, up from just dozens a few years ago.

"After every chain that gets some publicity, there's a flood of potential donors contacting kidney exchange networks and individual transplant centers," Alvin Roth, an economics professor at the Harvard Business School said.

The chain was also made possible by the decision of another pair in the group to be part of it.

Adam Abernathy, the television producer, and his fianc?e Dave Ferguson, 43, could have done a simple transplant between them because Ferguson's blood type made him a universal donor.

But they decided to be part of a chain when it was proposed by the hospital that Ferguson donate his kidney to a man whose blood type had made him a harder match for a donor, A. Jamal, the businessman and father of four.

"We realized if we were in somebody else's shoes, we'd want someone to do the same," Ferguson said.

Most of the group said they plan to meet their donors after recovering from the operation.

"I can't wait to meet them," Brittman said.
