Suu Kyi, in Myanmar since 1988, starts world tour

BANGKOK (AP) ? For 24 years, Aung San Suu Kyi was either under house arrest or too fearful that if she left Myanmar, the government would never let her return.

Now, in a sign of how much life there has changed, the democracy activist and long-time political prisoner is resuming world travels, arriving Tuesday night in neighboring Thailand after an 85-minute flight from her homeland.

With the installation of an elected government last year, and her party's own entrance into parliament this year, she can claim at least partial success for her long fight and feel the freedom to explore the world.

Suu Kyi is to spend several days in Thailand, meeting with poor migrant workers and war refugees from her homeland, as well as international movers and shakers at the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

On arrival at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, she was whisked to a car amid heavy security, bypassing a large crowd of waiting journalists.

She'll return to Myanmar briefly and head to Europe in mid-June, with stops including Geneva and Oslo ? to formally accept the Nobel Peace Prize she won 21 years ago.

In Dublin, she'll share a stage with U2 frontman Bono, a staunch Suu Kyi supporter, at a concert in her honor, according to Irish media. In England, she has been given the rare honor of addressing both houses of Parliament. France's Foreign Ministry says she also plans to stop in Paris.

The tour marks Suu Kyi's latest step in a stunning trajectory from housewife to political prisoner to opposition leader in Parliament, as Myanmar opens to the outside world and sheds a half century of military rule, with President Thein Sein getting her back for am ambitious program of reforms. Meetings with world leaders are planned along the way as dignitaries line up to shake Suu Kyi's hand.

Earlier Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met with her in Yangon, saying her "life and her struggle, her determination has inspired millions of people all over the world" and inviting her to visit his country.

The trip "signifies a strong vote of confidence on Suu Kyi's part in the seriousness of the reforms underway in the country," said Suzanne DiMaggio, the Asia Society's vice president of Global Policy Programs. "She would not take the risk of the leaving Myanmar if she wasn't absolutely certain she would be allowed to return."

The last time the 66-year-old Nobel laureate flew abroad was a year before the Berlin Wall came down, in April 1988, when she traveled from London to Myanmar to nurse her dying mother.

Until then she had led an international lifestyle, growing up partly in India, where her mother was ambassador. She later attended Oxford, worked for the United Nations in New York and Bhutan and then married British academic Michael Aris and raised their two sons in England.

Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar just as an uprising erupted against the military regime. As daughter of Gen. Aung San, the country's independence hero, she was thrust into the forefront of demonstrations until the military brutally crushed the protests and locked her under house arrest in 1989.

Over the next two decades she became the world's most famous political prisoner. During intermittent periods of freedom, she declined opportunities to go abroad for fear she would not be allowed to re-enter Myanmar.

Suu Kyi's commitment to the cause came at high personal cost. In 1999, she stayed in Myanmar even as her husband was dying of cancer in England. They last saw each other in 1995, after which the junta denied Aris a visa.

After her release from house arrest in November 2010, Suu Kyi had an emotional reunion with her younger son, Kim Aris, when the junta gave him a visa after a decade-long separation.

The English leg of Suu Kyi's trip is bound to include some family time. She will celebrate her 67th birthday on June 19 while in England, where Kim lives.

Suu Kyi's aides have offered few details about her trip aside from the destinations, saying only that she will pack medicine for motion sickness.

"She gets airsick and seasick very easily. She will have to take her pills to prevent airsickness," said Win Htein, a senior official from her National League for Democracy party. He said she was typically stoic ahead of her travels: "She doesn't look too excited about it."

Thailand was not part of the original itinerary but Suu Kyi decided last week to attend the economic forum. She has a Friday speaking slot that is bound to be the event's main attraction.

Suu Kyi's appearance at the conference had threatened to upstage that of Myanmar President Thein Sein, and he canceled over the weekend citing "urgent matters" at home, said Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi. He rescheduled his first official visit to Thailand for next week.

Thein Sein took power last year from the military junta following elections that were deemed unfair by international observers. Since then he has surprised much of the world by engineering sweeping reforms, though military leaders still have great control over the country.

Since Suu Kyi's release, many international dignitaries have visited her in Myanmar, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in December and British Prime Minister David Cameron in April. Cameron suggested she visit her "beloved Oxford" in June.

Suu Kyi replied at the time: "Two years ago I would have said 'Thank you for the invitation, but sorry.' But now I am able to say 'Perhaps,' and that's great progress."

Frustrated College Teacher: Student's Writing Skills Are Terrible

by Donna Garner | May 27, 2012 | Citizen Report ? Education

This is a series of two different interchanges with a college professor whose name I will keep confidential. I believe she expresses her concerns well and that they parallel what I said in my article Instead of Lowering Bar, How About Teaching Students To Write Correctly??

Texas? new curriculum standards for English/Language Arts/Reading that were passed in May 2008 now require the systematic instruction of correct grammar, usage, spelling, and expository/persuasive/research writing.

This year?s ninth graders through Kindergarten fall under these new curriculum standards, but the present sophomores through seniors are examples of students taught the ?old? curriculum standards that have been in place in Texas since July 1997. It is these students who undoubtedly reflect the same lack of English proficiency that this college professor describes.

We are hopeful in Texas that in a few years our high-school graduates will impress their college professors by demonstrating real proficiency with the English language.

Here?s the letter I received on May 19, 2012.

Hi, Donna,

I am a college professor who teaches ALL writing and reading intensive courses in both criminal justice and sociology.

I paid a visit to the Director of Instruction (D.I.) of English curriculum at a large public school district a month ago. This was done at the urging of the high-school principal who is very concerned about the lack of correct grammar in students? writing and speaking.

I told the D. I. that, as a university instructor, I deduct the first 20 points off for grammar and spelling on ANY paper students submit to me for a grade. Students are always horrified and don?t believe that I will do it until they see it on their first set of returned papers.

After mid-semester, students begin visiting the tutoring and writing centers for help and review of their papers before submission. But, the papers STILL come in with many errors, and I receive word from those tutorial groups that the students HAVE been in there!

Seldom does a student make above 80 on any written assignment turned in to me. When they make 85, 90, 92, or 98, I really praise them and usually in front of the class. I tell them to set up their own tutorial services and charge at least $20/hour. Everyone laughs! But, they know that I am serious.

What it tells me is that there are incompetent people in the tutoring and writing centers as well. Too often, the tutoring centers do not have English proficient people in there? maybe they are math or science tutors but cannot help in English grammar, even when the student makes an advance appointment.

I count off for run-on sentences, sentence fragments, incorrect sequencing; mis-use of semi-colon and comma, spelling, and verb tense change in mid sentence. I warn them that after the second typed line of the sentence, they are treading in very dangerous waters; the possibility of a run-on sentence is increased dramatically!

You would NOT believe how many of them use text messaging in their papers now, like ?til? for ?until? or ?u r? for ?you are? or ?your? for ?you are.? ?I carve up the papers. It looks as if I stuck my finger with a pin and dripped blood all over the pages.

The older students are very appreciative for the analysis. It takes me hours to do this. But, I encourage them to look over their first papers, find out what they did wrong, and NOT to do it again. I tell them to read aloud their own papers; they will catch many of their own errors then.

I warn them days in advance: NO contractions in formal writing; use ?who? for people and ?that? for things; we shouldn?t be writing the way we talk.

The English department was VERY surprised when they found out the way that I grade. I told them that I have done this (and am STILL doing this) at the various college campuses where I ?have taught. I will continue doing this. My students are going to learn how to write, one way or the other. Most every job requires writing.

A number of police officers in my city because their written reports were so poorly written that they were not admissible as evidence in court. It could not be determined whom the policeman was talking about or what he/she was trying to say. So now, the police academies have an instructional block on ?writing.? It has become a REAL problem for the D.A.?s office to prove a case because of the very poor use of the English language in the officers? reports!

Students tell me that they have not been trained in grammar since 4th grade ! ?In high school, the grammar books stay under their chairs all semester. When I was teaching high school, we used them every week! What is the matter with our English teachers?

One teacher told me that her department has been told to teach for creativity and to forget about the specifics of grammar; it will come to the students LATER ! ?English teachers are being told to do this! I am hearing this from teachers in various districts. It is shocking to me.

We also EXPECT for these kids to come into college already KNOWING how to operate the library software. We should not have to teach this to them again, but most of them don?t have a clue how to operate JStor, Ebsco, or any of the major library programs.

Students have never seen a peer-reviewed article. Our public school systems are paying a FORTUNE for these fancy software programs. Are only the administrators using them? At best, the kids are getting a brief explanation of what is there, and that?s it ? instead of being given a research project where they have to show documentation from peer-reviewed articles, as well as newspapers and magazines, covering their subjects. Are only the students at the gifted and talented levels getting the benefit of this product?

Read the second letter here.

Treating pain with transplants

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? A new study finds that transplanting embryonic cells into adult mouse spinal cord can alleviate persistent pain. The research, published by Cell Press in the May 24th issue of the journal Neuron, suggests that reduced pain results from successful integration of the embryonic cells into the host spinal cord. The findings open avenues for clinical strategies aimed not just at treating the symptoms of chronic debilitating pain, but correcting the underlying disease pathology.

There are two major classes of chronic pain: inflammatory pain that results from injury to tissue, such as muscle and bone, and neuropathic pain from injury to nerves, for example, in the limbs or face. Damage to nerves can occur after physical trauma and from chemotherapy drugs. With neuropathic pain, the pain occurs in the absence of stimulation, and there is hypersensitivity and exacerbated pain to stimuli that would not normally cause pain. Neuropathic pain is thought to involve the loss of inhibitory neurons that release the chemical GABA, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that controls the excitability of neurons, including neurons that transmit pain information.

"Pharmacological approaches to managing neuropathic pain enhance GABA-mediated inhibition. However, some patients do not respond to these therapies and there are significant adverse side effects," explains senior study author, Dr. Allan Basbaum from the University of California, San Francisco. "Therefore, new therapeutic approaches for neuropathic pain are essential." Dr. Basbaum and colleagues explored whether replacement of the damaged inhibitory neurons might be useful for reducing neuropathic pain.

The researchers transplanted immature GABA neurons from mouse fetal brain into the spinal cord of mice with nerve injury-induced pain, a model for human neuropathic pain. The transplanted cells not only survived, but made connections with appropriate targets and integrated into the host spinal cord circuitry. This resulted in an almost complete reversal of the mechanical hypersensitivity generated in a nerve injury model of neuropathic pain. In contrast, the transplant procedure was not effective at reducing pain in a mouse model of inflammatory pain, which is induced by tissue injury.

Taken together, the findings have exciting implications for a cell-based treatment of neuropathic pain in humans. "Our strategy not only ameliorates the symptoms of neuropathic pain but, importantly, is also potentially disease modifying," concludes Dr. Basbaum. "It is worth considering whether transplants such as these might have clinical utility in humans, a great advantage being that the adverse side effects associated with drug administration can be avoided."

Many Years Young: Fitness may reduce hypertension risk

(UPI) People who have a parent with high blood pressure can reduce their risk of hypertension with moderate exercise, U.S. researchers say?

"The results of this study send a very practical message, which is that even a very realistic, moderate amount of exercise -- which we define as brisk walking for 150 minutes per week -- can provide a huge health benefit, particularly to people predisposed to hypertension because of their family history," [lead author Robin P.] Shook said in a statement.

That 'Minority Report' interface? It's now only $70 away

44 min.

If you've ever watched "Minority Report" and wished that you could interact with your computer just by waving your hands around, then you might want to take a look at the Leap. It's a tiny little gadget which will supposedly allow you to control your devices by waving your hands, wiggling your fingers, or fidgeting with a pen.

Of course there's plenty of 3-D?motion-control technology out there already ??the Kinect comes to mind, for example?? but the Leap will still blow your mind. (If you think I'm?exaggerating, just watch the video below and tell me that you didn't get at least a bit excited.)

Made by Leap Motion, a motion-control software and hardware company, the Leap is marketed as "the world's most accurate 3-D motion control device." It is supposedly 200 times more sensitive than existing technologies, can detect motion within a space of four cubic feet, is accurate to within 1/100th of a millimeter, and can detect all ten of your fingers (as well as objects such as pens).

The Leap will connect to your computer via USB and calibrate in just one step. You will be able to fine-tune the device's sensitivity settings, create custom gestures, and even network multiple Leap devices together to create a larger interaction space.

"I believe?the Leap is the future of how people will interact with their devices,? says?Bill Warner, founder of Avid Technology and one of Leap Motion's investors, in a press release.??What's previously been an expensive special effect in movies is now an affordable everyday reality, in full 3-D. With the Leap, you use both hands and all 10 fingers?to work?within your computer's virtual environment just as easily as you do in the real world.?

The Leap will be priced at $69.99 and will ship this winter. It can be pre-ordered on the Leap Motion site right now. I will, of course, try to get my hands on one as soon as possible so that I can see if it really is as incredible as it looks in Leap Motion's demo?video.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts, or circling her?on?Google+.

Worst Column Ever by Times Pundit David Brooks: "When the Good Do Bad"

Evolutionary psychology, which traces what we do and think to instincts embedded into our ancestors by natural selection, is a dangerous meme. It can make even the smartest intellectuals say not-so-smart things. One is Steven Pinker, whose recent book The Better Angels of Our Nature (Viking Adult, 2011), while in many ways a monumental scholarly achievement, was marred by his commitment to the notion that war is an inherited disease for which civilization is the cure.

Another is New York Times columnist David Brooks. I like Brooks for the same reasons that I liked his conservative precursor at the Times, William Safire. Like Safire, Brooks often draws on science for guidance in the realm of politics, and he is unpredictable. Being predictable is a much worse sin for a columnist than being wrong.

I was thus delighted when, at a graduation ceremony I attended recently at Columbia University?s School of Journalism, my alma mater, Brooks got an award and gave a charmingly self-deprecating speech. He said that, although he is a narcissist, as all columnists must be, he considered many of his columns to be half-baked failures, which he rushes into print before they?re ready. When Brooks made this confession, I immediately thought of his March 19 column ?When the Good Do Bad,? which wins my award for? ?Worst Brooks Column Ever.?

Pondering the alleged massacre two months ago of 16 Afghan civilians by American soldier Robert Bales, Brooks wrote that ?when somebody who seems mostly good does something completely awful, we?re rendered mute or confused. But of course it happens all the time. That?s because even people who contain reservoirs of compassion and neighborliness also possess a latent potential to commit murder.?

In support of this claim, Brooks cited a survey by evolutionary psychologist David Buss, who found that 91 percent of male students and 84 of females had fantasized about killing someone. Brooks continued: ?These thoughts do not arise from playing violent video games, Buss argues. They occur because we are descended from creatures that killed to thrive and survive. We?re natural-born killers and the real question is not what makes people kill but what prevents them from doing so.?

First of all, Buss is like a parody of an evolutionary biologist, who spins surveys of modern, mostly American college kids into cartoonishly simplistic proclamations about human evolution. As I noted in an October 1995 article in Scientific American, ?The New Social Darwinist,? Buss?s speculations?which discount the role of nurture, culture and reason in shaping our behavior?are prime examples of what the biologist Stephen Jay Gould mocked as Darwinian ?just-so stories.?

Also, as I have pointed out ad nauseam on this blog and in a new book, the evidence that most people are ?natural-born killers? is flimsy to non-existent. As primatologist Frans de Waal and anthropologist Douglas Fry suggest in a special section of the May 18 Science on ?Human Conflict,? war, genocide and other forms of mass murder seem to be relatively recent cultural phenomena that culture can help us transcend.

As former soldier and West Point psychologist Dave Grossman points out, most soldiers make reluctant killers. And as psychologist Philip Zimbardo, who conducted the infamous Stanford prison experiment in 1971, has shown, most war crimes are the result of bad situations, not bad dispositions, bad barrels, not bad apples. In other words, war makes even ordinary, empathetic people act like psychopaths.

Gemli, the first online commenter on Brooks? March 19 column, made this point: Robert Bales ?was a soldier in a prolonged and brutal war that has persistently raised troubling questions about the limits of pressures that people can endure. Nothing can excuse his rampage, but it might be explained by a combination of battlefield exhaustion, brain trauma, and PTSD.?

Evolutionary psychology, instead of giving Brooks fresh insights and leading him in unpredictable directions, seems merely to validate his dark, Hobbesian perspective on human affairs. Instead of blaming American war crimes on our killer genes or even ?original sin? (yes, Brooks actually invoked that medieval superstition in his column), he should look more closely at political leaders, voters and pundits who have helped turn the U.S. into the world?s most warlike society. This is a cultural problem, not a genetic one.

Addendum: The British newspaper The Guardian is surveying readers on the question posed by The End of War: Is war inevitable? Chime in here. How, I wonder, would Brooks respond?

Top Stock ? Qualities Of The Ideal Stocks For Stock Investing | Make ...

?

By far the most recommended stocks for day trading and those in the top stock class have exceptional attributes. These are going to be listed below in a regressing sequence. The first criterion is the most important. Do not forget that the following are merely broad rules.

Volume

A telling element of an excellent trading stock is when it has sufficient volume. This kind of factor is regarded as the most telling attribute of an exceptional trading stock. In the event the stock does not have adequate volume, it will probably be difficult to establish substantive positions without influencing its price. Stocks that are thinly traded have risks which can be hard to manage. This is because the spreads are wider and it is very difficult to assume where you will leave your position in case your trade moves in opposition to you. Spreads are the variation between the asking price and the bid price. The simplest to determine the typical volume of a stock is to check its average daily trading volume during the last ten days or more.

Stocks with high daily trading volumes possess a lot more liquid features when compared to these stocks with reduced daily trading volumes. That is mirrored in the stock?s usual spread. The exclusion is that if the business is ?in play? as the result of a news item or another catalyst. When the company is ?in play?, an easier way to understand its liquidity is not a trailing average daily trading volume, but the current day?s volume as being ?in play? may significantly switch a stock?s trading traits. The typical rule affirms that excellent day trading stocks will trade a lot more than 50, 000 shares each day.

Movement

Another facet of a great stock is that it should not purely be liquid enough for buying and selling. It should offer you a motive to trade it. That factor is the intraday price activity. A top stock must have sufficient intraday range as a way for you to earn money from its price movement. Handling a liquid stock which trades at a constant price the whole day long usually will not generate an opportunity to gain worthwhile trades in it. The way to know if a stock offers ample intraday movement is to examine its average trading range over the last 10 days or maybe more. When the stock has a huge normal trading range, it is beneficial as it shows that the stock has sufficient intraday movement to trade.

News

This last part is known as a supplementary and not essentially a prerequisite. If the stock is the subject of the news, it is a good day trading stock on the day this news was launched. Reports that will impact the price of a stock may include upgrades and downgrades by analysts covering the stocks, earning reports, scam allegations, takeover rumors, same-store-sales numbers for retail companies, drug trial reports for biotech firms and many more. Stocks which have been on the reports normally go through a rise in quantity, volatility and cleaner movements. A clean move is a stock trending to the downside or the upside with minor noise in the form of shakeouts as well as retracements. It can be easier to be in stocks that move cleanly. A top stock for daytrading is usually fresh, volatile and possesses a sufficient volume. Just keep this in mind and you?re set.

A top stock can be recognized in many ways. Discover the best methods to take on day trading at Trade Stocks America, an online resource for finding the stock of the day at http://www.tradestocksamerica.com/.

  • If you decide to tackle an engineering challenge or to venture into the scientific unknown as an entrepreneur, you?re embarking on a real adventure ? difficult, fascinating, often risky. Sometimes you and your team might feel quite alone, while at others you might choose to partner with friends or even competitors. It?s important to remember that we all learn from and build on others? accomplishments.

I had imagined his new book idea would be based on my business experiences, but he said, ?There?s this great passage in your autobiography where you nearly get yourself killed.?
  • Ah, I thought, that?s more like it. ?Really. Which one? They were quite a few!?
  • ?You remember:?In the mid-1970s, a chap called Richard Ellis got you to try out his early form of hang glider.?
  • I remembered, all right.?The contraption was called a Pterodactyl. I took off in it by mistake and nearly killed myself. ?You know, a few days later Richard was dead, too.?

?Business Innovation

  • ?So,? he said, ?Ellis died, and you escaped only by the skin of your teeth. What we were wondering was, what on earth made either of you want to take those kinds of risks??
  • Why??Well, let?s not forget that Richard Ellis was one of the inventors of the Pterodactyl Ascender series of hang gliders. A few years after the crash, Jack Peterson, Jr. flew a Pterodactyl across the continentalUnited?Statesin?120-mile hops. His machine now hangs in the Smithsonian ? a stone?s throw away from SpaceShipOne, the first private manned space vehicle, which was designed by Burt Rutan.
  • ?Well ?? I began slowly, not exactly happy with where this conversation was going, ?there was the thrill, obviously. And then there was the whole sponsorship thing. Ellis wanted me to champion this new form of flying that he was introducing to theU.K.fromAmerica. I?ve always loved the idea of flying and I thought: maybe I can use this to publicize what I do.? / Business Innovation /

Virgin Galactic: Re-entry? / Business Innovation

  • The more I talked, the more connections I uncovered. ?You know hang glider wings are based on a design that was supposed to bring NASA?s Mercury capsules down to Earth? This of course ties in with what we?re doing with Burt Rutan at Virgin Galactic. Re-entry is the toughest recurring challenge for any space vehicle, and ?? I stopped. The publisher was grinning.
  • Soon we had a book, which I called ?Reach for the Skies? in homage to my childhood hero, British flying ace Douglas Bader. It?s about flight. More than that, it?s about the people behind the inventions and accomplishments.
  • If you?re considering a project that involves technical challenges, remember that long before innovators have the right materials at hand, we already know how to achieve our dreams.
  • Look at the history of flight:?the workings of intercontinental air travel were being hashed out by textile engineers John Stringfellow and William Henson nearly 60 years before the first airplane flight. / Business Innovation /

?Business Innovation

  • Throughout my career,?I myself have been deeply involved in projects that have pushed the envelope of manned flight. While I am known for drawing attention to Virgin, none of our experiments were just mere publicity ?stunts?; they were steps in our research and development process. Swedish aeronaut Per Lindstrand?and I crossed theAtlanticin a hot-air balloon in 1987 and the Pacific in 1991, setting records that still stand. The envelopes of those balloons were made of materials as radical then as Rutan?s space-faring composites are today.
  • Once you?ve solved all those engineering challenges, you?ll have to figure out how you?re going to turn your hard work into money. Drawing attention to your new idea or invention helps, but you?ll need a business plan.
  • The working method I?ve described, with its components of engineering, adventure, celebrity and business, was not invented by the Virgin team, though it has carried me and my friends from a basement offLondon?sEdgware Roadto the edges of outer space. This approach drew admiration, criticism and incredulity long before QueenVictoria?s Parliament rang with laughter at the preposterous idea of a world airline; long before startled peasants took pitchforks to Jacques Charles? gas balloon in 1783. It takes a very long time to build a business. At Virgin, my team and I build for the future. And the future?s wild. / Business Innovation /

McClymont sisters glad to be home | Northern Rivers Music | Music ...

BROOKE, Samantha and Mollie McClymont treasure every moment they have in their home town.

Peter McClymont gets a hug from his daughters (l-r) Mollie, Sam and Brooke McClymont prior to a Mayoral Reception yesterday.

Adam Hourigan

THEY may be in Grafton for only a few more days, but country music darlings Brooke, Samantha and Mollie McClymont treasure every moment they have in their home town.

Revelling in the chance to spend time with their loved ones and catch up on friends, the trio were special guests at a mayoral reception yesterday.

Describing them as "the sisters of Grafton", Mayor Richie Williamson welcomed The McClymonts back home ahead of their scheduled live performance and official launch of their third album, Two Worlds Collide, at the Grafton Racecourse tonight.

"It is always a privilege to have the girls back in Grafton. We at home are very proud of them and everything they have achieved," he said.

"I know there are only bigger and better things to come for the girls and we always enjoy the atmosphere they bring with them when they come home."

A short pause followed and the sound of applause filled the room before Sam stepped forward and thanked Cr Williamson for his kind words.

Announcing the choice of location for their album launch as a "no-brainer", Sam said.

Bringing Two Worlds Collide to Grafton was a homage to show people how much their home community's support means to the sisters.

The first single from the album, How Long Have You Known, rocketed to number one on the Australian Country Music chart and the CMC Video Chart in early April.

Mollie said the group was looking forward to performing their new songs live tonight.

"We would like to thank everyone for their support over the years," Brooke added.

"We really appreciate it."

Cr Williamson then became the first local to get his hands on Two Worlds Collide, a homecoming gift from the three sisters.

Tonight is the last time the girls will perform in Australia before embarking on a three-month summer tour in the USA.

Beckham thrilled about carrying Olympic flame

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? David Beckham just wants two things: the flame to burn right and a spot on Britain's Olympic team.

The former England national team captain and current star for the Los Angeles Galaxy will light a cauldron at a ceremony Friday when the flame arrives in southwestern England from Greece on the eve of a 70-day torch relay for the 2012 London Olympics.

"I hope it lights," he said with a chuckle.

Beckham, Princess Anne, London organizing chairman Sebastian Coe are escorting the flame, a symbol of peace and unity that harkens back to the origins of the games in ancient Greece. The 37-year-old star is excited about the chance to welcome the world to his "hood."

Beckham been involved in the London Games since the organizing committee launched its successful bid in 2005. His star power ? the kind that sends children into shrieks of hysteria and diplomats' wives in Athens into paparazzi ? is part of the reason that the International Olympic committee took notice of the London bid over Paris, the favorite.

While Beckham the celebrity isn't shirking the attention the Olympic torch brings, Beckham the athlete really, really wants to take part on the field.

"I've never played in an Olympic Games," he said. "Obviously, I'd love to."

"I've always made it clear that I love representing my country," he added. "I've done that quite a few times."

He's done that 115 times, to be precise, with the England team.

Beckham has been included in coach Stuart Pearce's 80-man shortlist that will be whittled down to 18 players in the coming weeks to form Britain's first Olympic soccer squad since 1960. If chosen, he would be one of the three players over age 23 allowed in each Olympic squad.

Many a camera will be turned to the photogenic Beckham when the flame arrives at a Royal Navy air station in Cornwall on Friday night. The flame, traveling on the gold-painted British Airways Flight 2012, will be carried off by Princess Anne, the head of the British Olympic Committee and herself a former Olympian. Beckham then will carry it to the cauldron, assuming it won't be too windy.

No matter what, there will be a backup. On the plane itself, there are four flames just in case, all guarded by security.

All this might sound like a lot of attention for a bit of a fire, but London's Olympic organizers are hoping that the flame's arrival can generate excitement about the Games.

The torch will be carried all over the British Isles by 8,000 chosen volunteers, mostly local heroes. Its 8,000-mile (12,875-kilometer) journey will linger on the iconic sites ? Big Ben, Stonehenge, the white cliffs of Dover ? and speed past less appealing areas. It ends up July 27 at Olympic Stadium in London.

Beckham is one of the bookies' favorites to open the Olympics by lighting the cauldron in London ? and he told reporters while visiting an Athens school that he'd love the job. Other favorites include miler Roger Bannister, rower Steve Redgrave, Coe, Queen Elizabeth II or other members of Britain's royal family.

But no word on that ? Coe says the decision hasn't even been discussed yet. For the moment, Beckham's just thrilled to light the cauldron at the navy base at Culdrose in Cornwall.

"Being here today just makes it all that real," he said in Athens. "Being handed the torch is the start of the games."

FILE - In this undated file photo provided by Fox, Darren Criss, left, and Chris Colfer are shown in a scene from "Glee." Fox announced Monday, May 14, 2012 that the network is moving "Glee" to Thursday nights in the Fall and turning its Tuesday schedule over entirely to comedies. (AP Photo/FOX, Adam Rose, File)

(AP) ? Britney Spears and Demi Lovato are joining the judging panel on "The X Factor" this fall, part of Fox's effort to boost its underperforming music competition shows.

The network's executives, in presenting next season's schedule to advertisers on Monday, also promised changes for "American Idol." While "Idol" remains Fox's centerpiece, as it has been for the past decade, it has lost a quarter of its audience this year.

Fox is adding two new comedies and a drama in the fall, pumping new life into "Glee" by moving it to a new night with guest stars Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker and touting a midseason drama starring Kevin Bacon as "the new '24.'"

The Spears announcement overshadowed the others. Despite weeks of rumors, it wasn't official until she strode onto New York's Beacon Theater stage wearing a white minidress, accompanied by show creator Simon Cowell and fellow judges Lovato and L.A. Reid.

"I'm so excited about the whole experience," Spears said. "It's going to be so much fun and different from anything I've ever done. I'm ready to find the true star."

Lovato said she was "totally stoked" to join the cast.

They replace judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, who were dispatched along with host Steve Jones after last fall's debut season of the competition didn't meet the creator's inflated expectations.

"Not to be negative about the people leaving, but we just felt the mix could be more effective and more entertaining," said Peter Rice, entertainment chairman for the Fox Networks Group.

Fox's entertainment president, Kevin Reilly, also promised work on "American Idol" next season but didn't specify anything.

"This year was a bigger drop-off than we anticipated," Reilly said.

He said "Idol" made no changes from the previous year and there was little "urgency to view" at the beginning of the season. He said there was still a lot of life left in the franchise.

"Glee," once a sensation, saw its viewership drop by 21 percent this season. It will move to Thursday nights and a comfortable 9 p.m. Eastern time slot following "The X Factor" in the fall. Reilly said the show is "poised for a creative renaissance" and has Hudson and Parker lined up for multi-episode guest slots.

Part of the reason Fox moved "Glee" is to make Tuesday a four-sitcom night, with two new shows joining "New Girl" and "Raising Hope." Mindy Kaling, actress, producer and writer for "The Office," creates and stars in "The Mindy Project," a romantic comedy about a doctor looking for love. The other new comedy, "Ben and Kate," is about a pair of odd couple siblings.

"We've been building comedy momentum on Tuesday, and we finally have the shows that have exactly the tone that we are looking for," Reilly said.

The fall's only new drama is "The Mob Doctor," on Monday night, about a young doctor who has to pay off her family's lifelong debt to the Chicago mob.

Reilly said Bacon's hiring for the midseason drama "The Following" was the casting coup of the year. Bacon plays a former FBI agent asked to come back to work to chase a serial killer he had caught once before. The killer escaped from prison and has resumed a series of grisly murders.

Another comedy focused on a family, "The Goodwin Games," is due at midseason and stars actor Scott Foley, of "Felicity" and "Grey's Anatomy."

Fox's long-running drama "House" is ending its run this spring, and the network is cancelling high-profile dramas "Terra Nova" and "Alcatraz."

Fox also has made changes to its long-running Saturday night lineup, where "COPS" won't return until midseason. In the fall, Fox will present live sports events such as college football, Major League baseball and NASCAR races that night.

Britney Spears, Demi Lovato Will Bring 'Serious Wisdom' to 'X Factor'

MTV News talks to 'So You Think You Can Dance' cast about Fox's decision to enlist the two pop stars for the reality singing show.

MTV News chatted with the folks of "So You Think You Can Dance," in the hours before the presentation where they were confirmed, to get their sage advice for Brit and Demi.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="'So You Think You Can Dance' Cast Weigh In On Britney Spears, Demi Lovato For 'X Factor'" id="vid:768829" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"You know, I don't have any advice for those ladies," "SYTYCD" host Cat Deeley explained. "What I do like about it though is they will be able to absolutely impart some serious wisdom. I love the idea that they've been in the business for so long and since being kids and so quite often they've had successes and they've had failures on things.</P><P>"And I think the most important thing is the mistakes we make," she added. "You learn so much from mistakes that you make and I think they'll be able to impart their wisdom to the new kids coming through. I think it's a great booking."</P><P>Judge Mary Murphy seemed excited by the chance to run into the girls at Fox-related events, and even shared that she'd love to see dancer Britney make an appearance on her show as well.</P><P>"So she would be a good [guest] too if she wanted to pop on over, but I think she's going to be a busy young woman with everything she has going on," she said. "I think we'll tune in to find out what the heck she's gonna say!" she said, going on to share some judging advice. "Just try to speak from the heart and you can't go wrong."</P><P>While Murphy and Deeley focused on the positive when it comes to their highly publicized judging spots, Nigel Lythgoe wondered if the singers (Britney, 30, and Demi, 19) might be too young for a mentor-type position.</P><P>"Well they've got to look on it as a brand-new show, to be frank. I don't think they need to look at the first season. I think they've got to be honest as they can be," he said of coming in for season two. "They're both artists and artists will always couch any criticism because they know that they've been criticized, so they've got to ignore that.</P><P>"They've got to be as honest as they can be with their contestants and just inspire them to be better," he said, before sharing his one hesitation about them.</P><P>"My only reservation is they're both young and I do think that mentors should be of an age," he added, joking he fears it might put older experts, like him, out of a job. "I do think mentors have had so much experience before they mentor. At the same time, both of these young ladies have had incredible personal experience and been through so much in their own lives that hopefully they can bring that to the party too. But at the end of the day, they are going to take newcomers and literally push them through a reality television competition. It's tough."</P><P><i>Do you think Demi Lovato and Britney Spears will make good judges on "The X Factor"? Leave your comment below!</i></p></p>

'Married To Jonas' Brings Jonas Brothers Fans 'Along For Journey'

'I'm sure they'll be catching us in the studio and some of the songs we're writing,' Joe Jonas tells MTV News about brother Kevin's E! show.

When "Married to Jonas" premieres this summer, fans will be treated to an inside look at the life and marriage of Kevin Jonas and wifey Danielle. While the show will mostly be focused on the married couple, expect some choice cameos from the other Jonas Brothers, baby bros Joe and Nick.

MTV News caught up with Joe on Wednesday in New York, and he opened up about appearing on the E! series, which will debut August 19. "The primary focus is on Kevin and Dani and the in-laws and the [Deleasa] family there but, of course, me and Nick are going to be on it quite a bit," he explained. " 'Cause we're just writing and working with Kevin, obviously."

And, the prospect of having the recording sessions for their forthcoming album featured on the show couldn't come at a more perfect time as the band of brothers is opening a new chapter in its career. "I'm sure they'll be catching us in the studio and some of the songs we're writing, which is exciting for us, because then we can capture it and kind of bring people along the journey," he said.

TV mogul Ryan Seacrest, who serves as a producer on the reality series, shared in a statement that he felt the couple's relationship would serve as perfect small-screen fodder.

"I vividly recall believing from the very first time that I met them that the Jonas Brothers would, without a doubt, become a worldwide cultural sensation," Seacrest said. "When we learned that Dani married Kevin, our production team became curious about what life would be like for a young bride entering the excitement, and sometimes chaos, of a pop star's life.

"Looking through the lens of young love, the show will examine the ups and downs of Dani and Kevin's marriage, against the backdrop of their contrasting family cultures, traditions and individual careers."
