When the lovely people at Cambridge Baby asked me to choose a sun hat to try out and review, I told them to send me something of their choice for 22-month-old Pierre. They sent me the Fireman Sun Hat (instantly renamed the Fireman Sam Hat in our house !), so called because of its shape.
It's made by Pickapooh - a name which had the girls absolutely delighted, running around giggling and chanting Pickapooh ! - a company based in Germany who specialise in organic, ethical kids hats and accessories.
I've never seen a sun hat of this shape but it's brilliant. It has a broad brim all the way round to offer protection to the face, ears and eyes, and it has a longer section at the back of the neck to prevent your little one getting sunburn?on the delicate skin at the back of the neck and shoulders. The bit at the front can be folded back if it annoys your child though. It's designed to fit all head shapes because it has a slightly stretchy, contrasting?band?of knitted organic cotton around the head.
Ah yes, organic - it's made of organic cotton, free of any chemical additives, but even more impressive is the fact that the hat is naturally UV-certified. I'm not entirely sure what the numbers mean but the label has "protect 20" and "UV standard 801" written on it. They explain : "Uniquely the UV standard 801 tests textiles under conditions of daily use : wet, stretched and after multiple care cycles."
The name "Fireman Hat" may make you think that this is a hat aimed at little boys, but you'd be wrong. It comes in a range of colours, including pinks and blues, and looks really good on little girls too, as these photos from the website show.
I gave it to Pierre to see what he'd make of it and he instantly put it on his head (not quite the right way round !) and burst out laughing. If your little one hates hats, the good news is, it has under-the-chin strings to allow you to tie it on, but these can be cut off if they annoy you.
We're heading to Turkey for a fortnight in the summer and this will DEFINITELY be coming with us. It is pricier than a lot of other baby/toddler sunhats but the great design, the organic label and the UV protection make it worth the money in my opinion.
