Hollywood has fallen prey to an ill-advised trend of spicing up romantic comedies with a dose of?secret agent action. The problem is the romantic plot ends up undeveloped and the stunts are far weaker than those in specialized action movies. After critically panned flicks like Killers and Night and Day, you would hope filmmakers had learned their lesson. Unfortunately, This Means War is just another attempt to draw in a female audience with hunky man candy and keep their boyfriends distracted with explosions.
Chris Pine and Tom Hardy fill their cliche dress?shoes perfectly as super spies and best buddies FDR and Tuck. Pine portrays playboy FDR with a perfect bachelor lifestyle and an inexplicable presidential nickname while Hardy plays a British divorcee and father of one. His son?s character may have been the most poorly employed performance in the movie. The boy should have been endearing, but he was just one of many plots to play on our heartstrings that fell totally flat. Reese Witherspoon?s character was so shallow she didn?t even fill out a cliche. There was a half-hearted attempt to make her a?fastidiously OCD old maid, but the effect is ruined by Chelsea Handler in the guise of her trashy, sex-crazed best friend.
Chelsea Handler?s character, Trish, is supposed to keep us entertained during the beginning of the movie, or at least I assumed so because I saw so few other attempts at humor. She has a reputation for crude comedy, and she continued to earn that reputation with every gag the censors let through her lips. While some of her quips and quirks were funny, many just left me wincing at the cheap attempts to get a laugh. Handler?s crass humor and the rival agents? attempts to woo Witherspoon with unbelievably over-the-top romantic gestures failed to melt my heart or keep me amused, and the movie took far too long to really get going.
The?highly advertised and poorly executed concept?of the movie is that?both agents?begin dating and eventually fall in love with one Lauren Scott (Witherspoon) and?start a series of?zany spy?hijinxes to bump each?other out of the dating scene. The amount of coincidence and friendly backstabbing was absolutely incredible, unlike?the action which?was disappointing even after I saw how bad the rest of the movie was shaping up to be. I was bored before the spies even started interfering with each other?s date nights. In a movie that has no chance at being meaningful, such poor pacing is an issue. In a gimmick-based flick, the gimmicks must come faster. After watching the trailer, there weren?t any climactic scenes of which?I hadn?t already seen a portion, and I found myself constantly waiting for the action to pick up or for some surprising new gag to work its way into the film. Neither came to pass.
I was unable to embed the trailer in this article because I was unable to find a cut of the trailer that wasn?t explicit. The movie didn?t deserve an R rating, but its PG-13 rating was appropriate and well-deserved. Keep in mind that all of the humor will be scatalogical, anatomical, or profane, and the movie is ripe with sexual themes and innuendoes. Violence was also a factor when rating the movie, but you don?t need to be worried about intense or frightening scenes. The stunts were by far one of the most boring elements of the movie, second only to Reese Witherspoon.
If you have issues with crude humor or poor filmmaking, don?t see this movie. Go see it if you?re content with juvenile humor, mature language, and dull stunts pushing along a dead plot, or like I did, because everything else is sold out. The empty theater spoke volumes.?I expected to leave the movies underwhelmed. I ended up surprised by how much more disappointing the movie could turn out to be than my worst fears.

This is as it should be. The movie's power comes from its uncompromising take on his heroism. This man who dislikes Jews and initially thinks only of his own profit, gradually, fitfully, is transformed by the end into someone who risks even the lives of his own family, whom he loves, in order to save the people he calls "my Jews."
Holland has made excellent movies in this vein before, especially the 1991 "Europa Europa," but "In Darkness" is her most unremitting achievement. The reason we feel so close to Socha, a man who at first seems nothing more than a racist scoundrel, is that his moral odyssey, with its advances and retreats, is so emotionally believable. Holland could not have chosen a better actor to play Socha, whose burliness and blank eyes are, as it turns out, camouflage for the valiant human within. (Wieck?ie?wicz has been amply honored in Poland for his stage and film work, almost all of which is maddeningly unavailable in the United States.)
There are sequences in this film that are almost impossible to take, such as the one in which the cries of a mother's newborn risks exposing the entire group, but for the most part Holland avoids depicting the full horror of the Jews' entrapment. (The assumption is that we already know the horrors.) When the story is periodically brought above ground, into the daylight, the effect is both exhilarating and unsettling. The bright, wide world looks like freedom after all that blackness, but this is an illusion: Death is here, too.
In the film's climax, the rain pouring down from the sky threatens to turn the sewers into a death trap. This is when Socha demonstrates his true mettle. He is possessed beyond reason by his need to save the Jews. Like few other movies, "In Darkness" gets at the mania of those who would risk everything to save others. Socha is bewildered by the man he has become, and exultant, too. He astonishes himself ? and us. Grade: A (Rated R for violence, disturbing images, sexuality, nudity, and language.)

Appalachia's aging population is rising fast ? Artesia News

MT. ORAB, Ohio (AP) ? It?s winter, so Donna Robirds puts on two sweaters in the morning and keeps heavy blankets handy as she sets her thermostat low ? 60 at night ? and bundles up to keep her utility bill down.
At 67, with a fixed income and a $563-a-month mortgage, she lives on a tight budget. Food stamps help the retired state employee stretch her budget in this Appalachian village. So has the mild winter.
?We haven?t had the extreme cold, so it hasn?t been too bad,? she said. ?I really need to watch my money. It?s going to be a struggle.?
Robirds? daily battle is being played out across the Appalachian region, which stretches through 13 states from northeastern Mississippi to southern New York. A part of the country that has long lagged behind the rest of the U.S. economically finds itself on the leading edge of a national trend: The number of Americans 65 and older is increasing, and many are struggling as government services are being cut in a rough economy.
Nationally, with the aging of the baby boom generation, people 65 and over are expected to account for 1 of every 5 Americans by 2030. Some places in Appalachia have already reached that benchmark, such as southern Ohio?s Brown County, where Robirds lives.
?These counties are like the canary in the coal mine,? said Suzanne Kunkel, who heads the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University of Ohio. ?This is a pretty dramatic change coming.?
More than 15 percent of Appalachia?s population is already at least 65, compared with 13 percent nationally, according to the 2010 Census. And projections show the number rising steadily in much of the region, as it is nationally.
The aging population means more demand for health care, economic help, transportation and home help, which are already in short supply in much of Appalachia.
?It?s getting more urgent in the number of people needing those services and having those available to them,? said Robert Roswall, commissioner of West Virginia?s Bureau of Senior Services. ?We have people waiting for all those type of programs.?
Appalachia has long been plagued by isolation, poor roads, sewer systems and other infrastructure needs, lack of education and the decline of coal mining, manufacturing and other key industries. The region has low per-capita income (less than $30,000 in 2009, 18 percent lower than the nation?s), low college graduation rates, an exodus of young working people, and high rates of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, along with poor access to health care.
Peggy Basham, 74, of Summersville, W.Va., is worried.
?I think most everybody in the area is,? she said. ?You?ve got baby boomers coming on. You?ve got so many seniors. ? Nothing stretches very far.?
Basham helps craft quilts that are sold to support the Nicholas County Senior Citizens Center. The senior center feeds 500 people per month, and Basham said more would come if only they had transportation from their mountain homes. She said she sees elderly people regularly forced to choose whether to pay for prescription drugs, heat their homes or buy groceries.
West Virginia officials say their state has the country?s highest concentration of older residents than anywhere but Florida. Sixteen percent of West Virginia?s population is 65 or older, compared with 17.3 percent in Florida, according to census figures.
And unlike those who flock to Florida?s retirement villages and condominium complexes, aging people in West Virginia and elsewhere in Appalachia have long been less likely to move, often because they can?t afford it or they have a strong attachment to home.
Robirds doesn?t have much choice: Her home?s market value declined in the nation?s housing crisis, and she is years away from paying it off. But the mother of three doesn?t want to move anyway.
?I want to have a place for my grandchildren to stay when they visit,? she said, ?and to be able to have my passion for gardening.?
Robirds got some vital help from Cincinnati-based People Working Cooperatively, a nonprofit organization that sent workers before winter to add insulation, clean vents, service her furnace, replace her refrigerator and perform other maintenance.
The organization, dedicated to helping poor people stay in their homes in the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana region, is seeing demand for its services rocket over the last two years, from 40,000 calls for help in 2009 to 66,000 in 2011, according to president Jock Pitts.
Those in charge of dealing with the surging numbers of elderly people say such community-based help and other innovative solutions are especially important in struggling areas such as Appalachia.
?Given our state?s limited resources ? we?re not going to hit the lottery ? we are changing, in Ohio, our approach,? said Bonnie Kantor-Burman, head of Ohio?s Department of Aging. ?There is a limit to what the state and federal governments are going to be able to do.?
She sounds the alarm by often displaying a set of color-coded maps produced through Miami?s Gerontology Center that show the projected aging of the population in eye-popping detail: In 2000, about one-fourth of the population in three of Ohio?s 88 counties was 60 or older; in 2010, that was true of 16 counties, most of them in Appalachia. By 2020, it?s projected to be 76 counties ? with one-third of the population in six of those counties 60 or older.
Other community efforts to keep senior citizens in their homes include The Village concept, in which residents and volunteers help provide transportation, handyman work and home health care. Pioneered in Boston in the last decade, it is spreading into such states as North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The state of West Virginia, meanwhile, has designated six ?retirement zones? where senior citizens can get access to affordable housing, health care, education, culture and recreation.
?We need to be talking about it and working together to find solutions,? said Thomas Campbell, a state legislator from Greenbrier, W.Va., whose widowed mother is 89. ?People in Appalachia tend to want to stay in their homes and have their family as close to them as they can, and I don?t think those are bad things. I think we?ll find a way to do it.?

12 EU leaders call for open markets to fuel growth
LONDON (AP) ? A dozen European Union leaders, including British Prime Minister David Cameron and Italian Premier Mario Monti, called Monday for an open-markets strategy to stimulate growth and jolt the region out of its economic doldrums.
The 12 leaders sent an open letter to EU leaders Herman van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso as Eurozone finance ministers met Monday to discuss a euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout for Greece in exchange for harsh austerity measures.
Their intervention comes ahead of a summit of European leaders in Brussels on March 1, and amid growing concern in Europe that austerity aimed at cutting ballooning deficits may also be choking growth.
"We meet in Brussels at a perilous moment for economies across Europe," the leaders said. "Growth has stalled. Unemployment is rising. Citizens and businesses are facing their toughest conditions for years. "
The letter urges European nations to deregulate their service, research and energy sectors, forge trade ties with growing markets including China, Russia and South America ? and even contemplate a free trade agreement with the United States.
"We must act with urgency, nationally and at the European level, to remove the restrictions that hinder access and competition," the leaders said, adding that "above all, we must reject the temptation to seek self-defeating protectionism in our trade relations."
It also suggested that faltering banks could be allowed to fail.
"Implicit guarantees to always rescue banks, which distort the single market, should be reduced," the letter said. "Banks, not taxpayers, should be responsible for bearing the costs of the risks they take."
The letter is signed by the leaders of Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Many of the suggestions recall promises made at a January summit in Brussels, where European leaders pledged to stimulate growth and create jobs across the region.

Shippensburg company stands beside worker with cancer

SHIPPENSBURG ? Employees at Town Cleaners and Cumberland Valley Rental are turning their office pink every Friday in support of a co-worker who is undergoing surgery for breast cancer later this month.
Robin Ray has worked with the company about a year. When she found out she had cancer in both her breasts and a lymphoid, she didn?t plan on telling anyone about it.
?I thought I could do it by myself,? Ray said. ?When I told one person, then everybody just kind of felt so sorry and I just felt so inspired when they said ?I?m going to pray for you.??
Once word got out at work, Sue Colangelo, customer service manager, knew she wanted to do something to support Ray so she planned to get her a pink sweatshirt with the company?s logo and a pink ribbon.
When company officials found out, they decided to purchase sweatshirts for all employees, including a brown one with a pink ribbon for the men, Colangelo said. Every Friday, all employees wear their shirts to support Ray.
?Nobody told her we were doing this. She just stopped dead in her tracks and started to cry,? Colangelo said. ?She thought she was going to have to go through this alone, but we?re a family here.?
Ray described it as ?awesome? when she first noticed the pink sweatshirts and then saw everyone, including the drivers, wearing them to support her. ?I just cried. I was so excited that everybody in the whole place was wearing their sweatshirts in honor of me,? she said. ?They are so sweet and supportive.?
In addition to the sweatshirts, employees have been pulling together to help Ray find support groups, find a health center to help financially since she doesn?t have insurance, and help her with her bills, Colangelo said.
?She didn?t know how she was going to get back and forth from her doctor?s appointments, she?s on such a tight budget,? she said. ?Well, we pulled together and got her gas cards. She was just so touched.?
The group is also working to set up a fund for people to donate to in order to help to Ray with the ongoing medical costs and bills when she has to take off work, she said.
Colangelo said she was motivated to help Ray after losing many family members, including her mother, to different forms of cancer.
?I think everybody is touched by someone with cancer. I just want to do whatever I can with anybody to keep their spirits up,? she said. ?I?m just hoping that this story will inspire other people, especially in the work place, to step up even if it?s nothing else but wearing pink.?
Ray, who is in her 40s, will be going in for a double mastectomy on Feb. 28 and said she is grateful to everyone for their prayers and support. ?I don?t understand why God let?s things happen sometimes, but I know something beautiful is going to come from this,? she said.

Your credit history is very important especially if you are considering applying for and taking loans in the future. Loan providers always check credit scores of borrowers before approving loans. Moreover, consumers are entitled to specific loan products based on credit ratings. If your credit score is high, you could enjoy the benefit of choosing any of your desired loan and getting lower or more competitive interest rates. Here are some ways to maintain a healthy credit history.
? Pay your bills on time. This is the best strategy to earn and keep a healthy credit score. As much as possible, avoid making delayed payments. That is because such delinquencies would certainly be recorded and noted by the credit rating agencies. ? Avoid carrying or leaving a balance on any of your credit cards. If you are currently repaying in installment a huge credit card balance, it would be best to temporarily keep your plastic card aside so you would not be tempted to use it again to make any purchase. You may have to wait until your previous balance is fully cleared before using your card again.
? Avoid credit card purchase transactions as much as possible. There is a reason for this tip. Most consumers end up buying impulsively and excessively using their plastic cards. The usual result: they accumulate huge debt that is greater than how much they could handle.
? Always check your credit report. Credit agencies are also prone to committing mistakes. Yours is the responsibility to constantly monitor your own credit score. You might be a victim of stolen identity. If you are, filing a police report could be an initial effective way to repairing and correcting your bad credit history. Also contest some bad score entries especially if you are sure that you have always been paying all your dues on time.
? Keep your credit cards active. It is not advisable to close all your credit card accounts. Doing so would make you invisible to credit rating agencies, which is worse. Just remember that your payment history would remain within your own credit report for at least seven years. If you have to close credit card accounts, make sure your credit report would note that those were closed upon your personal request and not upon the decision of the credit card firms.
? Strictly stick with your current payment plans on any debt like home loans and auto loans. There is no need to modify your payments. But if you have to do so, be sure to consult your loan provider and ask for ways that would not possibly hurt your credit standing.
? Lastly, be proactive with the way you handle your credit. Do not even run away from your financial obligations. Loans and debts are meant to be repaid. Nobody could run away from them. Loan providers may fail in collecting repayments but credit scores would always take the revenge.

For Houston mourners, a dearth of places to grieve (AP)
NEWARK, N.J. ? In Whitney Houston's hometown, her family plans a private church service, with no public memorial set. In Los Angeles, where she died, there's not even a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for fans to pile flowers. So for the legion of music lovers mourning a global superstar, where do broken hearts go?
Fans who have gathered outside the church where Houston will be eulogized Saturday at an invitation-only service ? and outside the funeral home where her body now rests ? say they understand why the family wants to keep the world out the best they can. But they also yearned for the chance to fully share in the grief and the remembrance of a native daughter who made it big and made them proud.
Samuel Turner Jackson, of Newark, said he was looking forward to heading down to "The Rock," as the Prudential Center is known. Before, that is, the funeral home announced Tuesday that no public service would be held at the 18,000-seat arena, an option that had been discussed.
The arena, home to the NHL's New Jersey Devils, displayed an image of Houston on a screen outside Tuesday.
"We don't know what the circumstances are, but we're sure that the family did want to share something with the community that she gave so much to," Jackson said. "But they have their reasons, and we're going to do the best we can to pay our respects and to mourn her."
Antonio Ballinger, of Newark, also hoped to attend a public service and "see her off," and said he was saddened to hear he wouldn't get the opportunity.
"But my blessings go out to the family, and I wish them nothing but the best," he said.
The family said Tuesday it had no plans right now for a public memorial. Still, fans in this downtrodden city held out hope.
"Maybe at some point down the road, they might do something," said B.J. Frazier, of East Orange. "It's like they're saying today, they shared her for a long time and they just want her to themselves for now."
Houston, a sensation from her first, eponymous album in 1985, was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "How Will I Know," "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You." But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy, and she couldn't hit the high notes.
Houston, 48, died Saturday at a hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., just hours before she was scheduled to perform at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards bash. Officials say she was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub.
Authorities said an autopsy found no indications of foul play or obvious signs of trauma on Houston. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.
Houston was born in Newark and raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music program for many years. Her cousin, future pop star Dionne Warwick, also sang in its choir.
The family decided that, after sharing Whitney with the city, state and world for more than 30 years, "this is their time now for their farewell," said funeral home owner Carolyn Whigham.
"The family thanks all the fans, the friends and the media, but this time is their private time," she said.
The hearse that carried Houston's body from an airport to the Whigham Funeral Home came into Newark under the cloak of darkness, in the middle of the night, denying local folks another opportunity to grieve publicly.
Police met with church officials Tuesday to discuss logistics and how to handle the large crowds expected to gather Saturday in the streets outside the New Hope Baptist Church, about a mile from the funeral home.
In Newark, perennially ranked among the nation's poorest and most dangerous cities, a public memorial at taxpayer expense is a tricky proposition. New Jersey's largest city, at more than 270,000 residents, laid off more than 160 police officers in November. The dismal school system is relying on a large grant from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for salvation.
And whether the megastar's estate would pick up any slack for a memorial is up for debate. The singer failed to fulfill a $100 million recording deal in 2001 that reportedly called for six records. Since then, only four have come out, including a greatest hits collection that was not released in the United States. She lost two homes to foreclosure several years ago.
Newark's quandary is similar to the decisions Los Angeles had to make when Michael Jackson, another pop superstar brought down before his time, died in 2009. A public memorial at the Staples Center, a professional sports arena, cost taxpayers about $3 million but pumped a million more than that into the local economy through hotel stays, restaurants and other businesses, according to a city report.
In Los Angeles, it has become a tradition that whenever a major celebrity dies, fans lay flowers and other gestures of sorrow and tribute on the deceased's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Houston had no star, leaving Angelenos with nowhere to express their grief.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which manages the Walk of Fame, explained that Houston was selected for a star in 1995, but a date was never requested by the singer's representatives for an unveiling ceremony. That selection expired in 2000, it said, but can be reconsidered if desired by the family.
Gospel singer Marvin Winans, a Grammy Award winner and longtime family friend, has been chosen to give the eulogy in Newark, his son, Marvin Jr., and Winans' office at Perfecting Faith Church in Detroit told The Associated Press.
Winans, in his role as a pastor, married Houston and fellow singer Bobby Brown in 1992; the couple later divorced. The Winans and Houston families have been friends for years, and Houston performed with Winans' siblings CeCe and BeBe, members of one of gospel music's most prominent families.
Houston was especially close to CeCe and BeBe Winans and performed with both. She and CeCe Winans sang "Count on Me," for the movie "Waiting to Exhale," in which Houston starred.
In a show of support for the local community and in lieu of flowers, Houston's family asked that any donations in her memory be sent to the Whitney Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, a public school in East Orange serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Houston attended the school as a girl, when it was named the Franklin School, and regularly visited for many years afterward. On Monday, students held an outdoor service in her memory.
Houston left behind one child, daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, 18, from her marriage to Brown.
Gov. Chris Christie ordered flags flown at half-staff Saturday at state government buildings, describing Houston as a "cultural icon" who belongs in the same category of New Jersey music history as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.
"Her accomplishments were a great source of pride for the people of the state," he said.
