According to a new analysis of federal data, sport utility vehicles aren't as deadly to passengers cars as they once were. It suggests, according to Joseph White at the Wall Street Journal, that "U.S. auto makers have largely resolved one of the most vexing highway safety issues of the past 20 years." The fatality rates for occupants of cars or minivans weighing 3,000 to 3,499 pounds that were hit by SUVs of similar weight dropped by nearly 64% to 16 deaths per million registered vehicles during the two-year period 2008-2009, down from 44 deaths per million vehicles in the 2000-2001 period, according to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research arm of the insurance industry. The study is based on federal crash data for one- to four-year-old vehicles.

As we reported yesterday, GM's OnStar will be disabling a plan to track the locations of people who left the program. Now Bloomberg's calling it GM's "Facebook" moment. We concur. "It just feels to some consumers like they're being betrayed or somehow tricked," Heidi Shey, an analyst at Forrester Research, said in a phone interview. Personal data and privacy issues make up "a very sensitive area that hasn't been figured out in terms of how this information can be used or should be used."

The federal government plans to delay until mid-November new rules for implementation of a set of fuel efficiency standards for cars and light-duty trucks, administration officials said Tuesday. In late July, President Obama announced a deal that called for cars and light trucks to achieve a fleet-wide average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, nearly double the 2011 model year average of 27.8 mpg. The new standard would be phased in beginning in 2017. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Transportation Department were to issue the rules this week. But the administration and other participants in negotiations over the rules said their issuance would be delayed six weeks because of the volume of comments received and the technical work that remained. Basically, they need more engineers.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. Vice Chairman James B. "Jimmy" Lee said Barack Obama's administration "did the right thing" by pursuing the offering. "They did a big deal within the right kind of valuation," Lee said today at the Bloomberg Dealmakers Summit in New York on a panel with GM Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson. But of course he did. Big Progress on the Little Things

In the trenches of consumer technology, there?s plenty to complain about. Today?s cell-phone contracts are exorbitant and illogical (why has the price of a text message doubled in three years?). Those 15-second voicemail instructions still seem to last forever and use up our expensive airtime (?When you have finished recording, you may hang up??oh, really?). And laptop batteries still can?t last the whole day.

But here and there, in unsung but important corners of consumer tech, some long-standing annoyances have quietly been extinguished. These developments deserve a lot more praise than they?ve received.

Take the megapixel race. For years the camera industry brainwashed us into believing that a camera?s megapixel measurement somehow indicates the quality of its photographs.

It doesn?t. A lousy photo still looks lousy?even at 45 megapixels. In fact, more megapixels can mean worse images because the more photo sites (light-sensing pixels) you cram onto a sensor, the smaller they get, the less light they collect and the more heat they produce, resulting in ?noise? (random speckles).

The megapixel myth was a convenient psychological cop-out for consumers, who longed for a single, comparative statistic like miles per gallon for a car or gigabytes for an iPod. The camera companies played right along because it meant that they didn?t have to work on the factors that really do produce better pictures: the lens, the software and, above all, the sensor size.

In the past two years, though, a quiet revolution has taken place. The megapixel race essentially shut itself down. The megapixel count came to rest at 10 or 12 megapixels for pocket cameras, maybe 16 or 18 for professional ones?and the camera companies began putting their development efforts into bigger sensors. Cameras such as the Canon S95, the Sony NEX-C3 and Micro Four Thirds models pack larger sensors into smaller bodies.

Another example: power cords. We?ve all griped at one time or another about our drawers full of ugly, mutually incompatible chargers. Every new cell-phone model, even from the same manufacturer, used to require a different cord (and car and plane adapters), racking up another $50 per phone sale per customer.

And then, one great morning, electronics executives must have confronted themselves in the mirror, filled with shame, and decided to shut down that extortionist, environmentally disastrous profit center.

In Europe, for example, all the major cell-phone makers agreed to standardize their cords. Today every phone model uses exactly the same interchangeable micro USB power cord.

Similarly, the micro USB?s cousin, the mini USB, has been making its own conquests. Now you can charge up most BlackBerries, Bluetooth headsets, e-book readers, music players and GPS receivers by connecting a USB cable to either a power plug or your laptop. You can also use the same 30-pin charging cord on every one of the 200 million iPhones, iPads and iPod touches ever made.

Finally, it?s time to give thanks for the most important revolution of all: the simplicity movement.

For decades the rule in consumer tech was that whoever packs in more features wins. Our gadgets quickly became complex, cluttered and intimidating.

But then came the iPod, a music player with fewer features than its rivals (no radio, no voice recorder); it became the 800-pound gorilla of music players. Then the Flip camcorder?so simple, it didn?t even have a zoom?snapped up 40 percent of the camcorder market (until Cisco bought and, inexplicably, killed it). And the Wii, a game console whose controller has half as many buttons as the Xbox?s or the PlayStation?s and whose graphics look Fisher-Price crude, became a towering success, outselling its rivals year after year.

List: 5 Deceptive and Illegal Life Insurance ... - Life Insurance Health

Life insurance is can help your loved ones cover your funeral expenses and help give financial support in the case of your death. If any of your loved ones depend on you for income, your life insurance will help them get by. With the financial welfare of your loved ones on the line, you need to carefully consider which life insurance policy is right for you. Unfortunately, while most life insurance providers are legitimate, there are a few insurance providers who are disingenuous and use deceptive or illegal tactics to conceal the true nature of their products. They put their short-term profit over your loved ones? long-term welfare. Some of the common fraudulent life insurance sales practices are listed below.

Misrepresentation

One of the most common deceptive life insurance sales tactics is misrepresentation. This may include any false or misleading information about the policy?s terms, conditions, extent of insurance coverage, nature of the policy and amount of interest payable to the insured. The term also covers any false information about other insurance companies that the insurance company may use in order to persuade you to switch policies. Misrepresentation is illegal under both federal and state law. The best way to detect misrepresentation is to carefully look at the contract before signing it and check every paragraph. The contract should contain the real terms ? otherwise, the insurance company cannot legally enforce them.

Churning

?Churning? occurs when an insurance agent tries to persuade you to replace or healthily modify your current life insurance policy with a new one. While that may not be entirely untrue, the new insurance will inevitably have bigger premiums and other fees. That is because, when you reapply, you are treated as a new policy holder, and you are judged based on your current age and health rather than your age and health at the time of your original policy.

Vanishing Premiums

A variant of churning, this involves insurance agents using graphs and charts to convince you to ?roll over? cash value from your existing policy into a new policy. This would supposedly allow you to avoid paying premiums, since the rolled over cash will cover them. While it?s possible to achieve this on the short term, it never lasts more than a few years. The interest rates will inevitably change and the rolled-over cash will run out, leaving you paying even bigger premiums then before. If the insurance agent doesn?t mention this, they are breaking state and federal law.

Built-in Insurance

The term refers to situations where credit lenders who require you to purchase life insurance (usually from an affiliated insurance provider) before you can take out one of their loans. In some cases, life insurance is built directly into the loan contracts, usually as premium payments that are included into your loan payments.

Low Face Value Life Insurance

The term refers to any policies where benefits are less than a multiple of premiums. Such policy asks you to pay more then it will ever be worth. Unfortunately, the practice isn?t illegal in every state, so you should consult your state?s attorney general before you report this practice to authorities.

"L Word" star booted off plane over kissing dispute (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former "The L Word" star Leisha Hailey complained in a stream of Twitter messages on Monday that she and a girlfriend were kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight in a dispute over their kissing on a plane.

Hailey, 40, tweeted that a flight attendant had told her that Southwest "was a 'family' airline and kissing was not ok," and that she and her companion were then "escorted off the plane for getting upset about the issue."

"SouthwestAir endorses homophobic employees," she tweeted. "Since when is showing affection toward someone you love illegal? I want to know what Southwest Airlines considers a 'family.'"

She went on to tweet: "Boycott SouthwestAir if you are gay. They don't like us."

Hailey, who starred on Showtime network's "The L Word" as Alice, a bisexual magazine writer and radio host, also demanded a public apology.

The airline issued a statement saying initial reports it received about the incident "indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive."

"Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender," the airline said. "The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight."

The statement concluded: "We regret any circumstance where a passenger does not have a positive experience on Southwest and we are ready to work directly with the passengers involved to offer our heartfelt apologies for falling short of their expectation."

An airline spokesman declined to comment beyond the prepared statement.

The incident comes a little over three weeks after another celebrity, Green Day rocker Billie Joe Armstrong, was complained he was booted from a Southwest flight in Oakland, California, because he was wearing his baggy pants too low.

Mysterious Samsung Device Up For Gaming and Entertainment ...

We already know that Samsung is holding another of its Unpacked?events at CTIA in just a couple of weeks, but details have yet to be released. ?Whatever it is though, is sure to pack some sort of gaming or big-screened-multimedia punch. ?The nominees for CTIA?s ?Hot for the Holidays Awards? have been announced with a mysterious and unannounced Samsung product listed under the ?Gamer & Entertainment Enthusiast? category.

If you look at the other items listed, you will see two of their tablets, so this could be the 7.7? Tab that has yet to land in the states or as a few other sites have suggested, is the Galaxy Nexus. ?Rumored to have a 4.65? HD screen?(Super AMOLED HD?), you would almost think that the next Nexus would have found its way into the ?Gadget Guru? category ? or would that have made it too obvious? ?A big HD screen on a phone does scream, ?Play games on me!? though.

Then again, wouldn?t Google want to unveil the next Nexus and not Samsung? ?While I would love for this to be the Ice Cream Sandwiched Verizon beast, I?m not willing to put a ton of money on that, just yet. ?The good news is that we will be there to find out.

Update: ?Galaxy Tab 7.7 just cruised through the FCC. ?Would not be surprised if this is the device they announce.

What do you guys think? Any guesses?

Real Estate Information ? Blog Archive ? Is Commercial Real Estate ...

Commercial real estate is an excellent opportunity for investing and generating outside income. There are numerous people over the years that have started to invest in commercial real estate, with this type of property being sold and purchased on a regular basis, this could be a great way to invest your money with the potential of a good return. Before anyone ever decides to invest in the commercial market, it is extremely important to understand the industry and all the components surrounding it.

It?s very important investors understand the commercial real estate basic definition. Commercial property is made up of various properties that can produce revenues and possible income for their owners. The properties can have the capability of producing revenue and/or income immediately, or possibly sometime in the future, but are still consider commercial real estate.

Investing in commercial properties is a very smart choice for investors for various reasons. One reason that investors like to invest in commercial properties is because of the potential short-term and long-term financial benefits. In the short term the property can produce a better cash flow for the use of the property, with in the long term the property can appreciate in value which in the long term could be of value to you upon selling the property. In most cases investing in commercial properties has a lot less risk involved then in some other types a real estate. As for example, if you purchase a strip mall or maybe apartment building, the risk of you investing in those properties is divided up between your renters, and even though you may not have all units rented, you are still getting return on your investment in still making money.

Another factor to consider is a large amount of different types of properties that you can invest in. There are numerous areas of different commercial properties there are great investments. If a building consist of more than four units, they can be considered as commercial real estate. Other areas that are considered commercial property can include properties such as commercial centers, industrial parks, mobile home parks, strip malls, apartment buildings, and RV parks.

If you?re thinking about investing in commercial properties you need to have a plan about how you are going to handle the financing. Most investors do not use all their money to finance or purchase a property, but have other means to finance and purchased it. In most cases you will go to a lender to heat your financing, but they are a few things you need to think about. Make sure you have a good business plan and be able to describe to the lender the type of property you are looking for and how you plan on being successful with your investment. You need to show to the lender that you have a portion of the funds needed put aside, and that you are a serious investor that is willing to invest in your success. You should have an update appraisal of the property that you are interested in investing in so the lender can see what the current market value is of the property you are wanting to invest in. With this type of investment you should hire a attorney to look into any legal issues that could come up to protect your interests. And before you make a decision on any financing you should compare rates of several lending companies.

There are several ways that you can get started in investing. One of the main things you need to do is to educate yourself by reading books on investing in real estate, searching the Internet for any information on commercial property investing, and maybe one of the best ways is to talk to your family or friends or business associates that are already investing in commercial property. Studying their success in the states can help you tremendously. If you?re thinking of investing you need to look around the area that you live in, and what type of properties are for sale and what the asking price of the property is and what properties sold and the price. You can also attend some of your city planning and zoning meetings to see what is going on in your area.

Commercial real estate can be a great investment opportunity for you, but educate yourself.

History of Online Gaming on the iPhone | hot trends

The growth of online gaming has always been intricately linked with leaps in technology.

The first online casinos which allowed players to wager real money online for the first time ever weren?t launched until the early 90?s when Microgaming (a small gaming software developer located in the Isle of Man) developed software that could provide a platform for playing casino games online.

From the 1990s to 2009, more than 600 online casinos were launched for both US and non-US players offering an average of more than 200 varieties of casino games such as blackjack, craps, baccarat and video poker.  Although the UIGEA 2006 severely restricted the US market and made depositing/withdrawing funds at many casino almost impossible, the US gambling market is still growing rapidly due to loopholes in the US legislation which allows offshore based casinos to provide services to US gamblers.

From around 2007 ??? 20010, another development in technology enabled Flash-based casinos to provide instant casino games to players.  An instant casino means that you no longer have to download the casino games to your desktop in a large file in order to play them.  Both Party Casino and Bodog for example now provide a choice of non-download and downloadable casino clients for players.

Over the next five years however, those in the business of gaming are investing heavily in mobile gaming and gambling products.

The launch of the iPhone in 2007 was the first smartphone of its kind to be not just popular but spread the technologies of the smart phone to the commercial AND business end of the market.  With more than 40 million iPhone units expected to be sold in 2011, the Apple iPhone has become one of the major targets and mobile products for online gaming companies such as 32Red and Betfair to exploit.

The massive market share of the iPhone has already meant that a number of casinos have already launched independent apps for their casinos games specifically for the iPhone

One of the drawbacks to iPhone casinos apps however is that because Apple has refused to allow apps that use Flash/Java technology to be listed on the App store, it has made it slightly harder to develop functional apps with a large variety of games.  The majority of iPhone casino apps at the moment (including 32Red and Spin Palace) only feature around 10 real money casino games.  Whether or not this will be improved in the future or whether Apple changes their stance however will wait to be seen.  Full Tilt Poker for instance, after launching their mobile poker platform ?Rush Mobile? soon declared that it would not be available on the iPhone because of this problem.

Easy Fruitcake Recipe for Holiday Dinners, Parties, and Gifts ...

Fruitcake Recipe for Thanksgiving or Christmas - gabriel77
Fruitcake Recipe for Thanksgiving or Christmas - gabriel77

This fruitcake is a hit at parties and family get-togethers, but it also makes an ideal gift to acknowledge friendship and good service during the holidays.

Fruitcake is a traditional dessert in many families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. It is in mine. Plus, fruitcakes are excellent gifts for neighbors, coworkers, delivery persons, and other individuals whom one likes to acknowledge with some holiday token of appreciation. Of course, as everyone knows, not all fruitcakes are created equal, since some leave much to be desired when it comes to taste. However, this recipe my mother used, and her mother before her, is guaranteed to produce results that are tasty, moist, and rich. In fact, this cake is so yummy that everyone will be begging you to share ?your? recipe.

Note: For even moister and more flavorful cakes, pour either wine or brandy, not both, over the cakes before wrapping them in cloth or aluminum foil for storage, or for best results, wrap them in cloths that have been dampened with either wine or brandy. Also, for optimal taste, make the cakes at least three or four weeks in advance of when they will be needed, although you can store them in the freezer for longer periods of time. Also note: You can store the cakes in the freezer if you are making them well in advance of when they will be needed.

Recipe for Fruitcake with Coconut, Almonds, and Pecans

This recipe makes two loaf fruitcakes. Moreover, the cake is a bit nontraditional in that the recipe calls for coconut, but if you like coconut, you?ll be pleased with the results. Then again, it?s also loaded with nuts and other ?goodies,? so there?s something to please everyone?s palate.

Note: Halve the cherries and cut up the other candied fruits before measuring.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 9 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup softened margarine or butter
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup orange juice (I prefer the high-pulp type)
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups golden raisins
  • 2 and 1/2 cups halved candied cherries
  • 2 cups cut-up candied pineapple
  • 2/3 cup candied citron, cut up
  • 2/3 cup candied orange peel, cut up
  • 1 and 1/2 cups whole almonds, blanched
  • 3/4 cup flaked coconut
  • 2 cups pecan halves

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees.
  2. Line 2 pans (9x5x3 inches) with aluminum foil.
  3. Grease the foil.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, shortening, margarine or butter, orange juice, and eggs.
  5. Beat on low for 30 seconds, scraping bowl continually.
  6. Change to high speed and beat for 3 minutes.
  7. Place fruits and nuts in a separate large mixing bowl.
  8. Add batter to nuts and fruits.
  9. Blend well.
  10. Pour into pans, spreading batter evenly.
  11. Bake 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours, or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. (Cover with aluminum foil during last hour of baking to prevent over-browning)
  12. Remove from oven, allow to cool for about 30 minutes, wrap, and store in refrigerator.

Reminder, if you are adding brandy or wine to the cakes, either pour the liquid directly over the cakes before wrapping or else wrap them in cloths dampened with your choice of liquor. However, if pouring wine or brandy over the cakes, don?t overdo the liquor, or you just might make folks tipsy.

Good dental care is important for your overall health ? Health & Fitness

Chances are you are going to need emergency dental treatment at some point in your life. The problem is that many insurance companies don?t include coverage for emergency dental procedures that you most likely can?t afford to pay for yourself. If you have suffered an accident or you are experiencing intense dental pain, you can?t sit around and wait to see your regular dentist. Emergency dental treatment is essential to stop the pain and any damage that may have occurred.

Very often, people make the mistake of waiting until they are feeling pain before they see their dentist. Rather than taking advantage of the preventative treatments that dentists offer to keep cavities and gum diseases from developing, people may feel they are saving money by only visiting their dentist when they feel it is needed. This is when emergency dental action comes in. Even when you feel your dental pain is minor, there could be a very big problem developing that could greatly affect the health of your teeth. Good dental care is essential for your overall health.

Going to see an emergency dental professional right when you first start to notice dental pain is very important to maintain good dental health. The work they perform will stop the progression of dental damage as well as stop dental pain. Even if you experience intense dental pain in the middle of the night, you still need to seek help from emergency dental personnel, like Night Dental. You wouldn?t want the problem to become worse.

When you first go to an emergency dental professional, they will most likely give you some form of pain relief like Nitrous Oxide or intravenous medication to give you instant relief from your pain, also allowing them to work on your teeth without you feeling it. There are a number of dental procedures they might do to fix the problem including fillings, crowns, implants and even veneers to hide any aesthetic problems. All materials they use are durable and completely safe. Of course, the treatment you need, the material they use and the extent of the dental damage will determine the cost of the visit.

The headache and high costs of emergency dental treatments can be completely avoided if proper dental hygiene is maintained. Regular brushing and flossing and periodical visits to your dentist can ensure the health of your teeth. Not only will you be pain-free, but your smile will look great as well. Extensive dental procedures often cause patients anxiety because of the time in the dentist chair and all the drilling. Don?t put yourself through this. Take advantage of regular dentist visits to keep your teeth clean and healthy.

Two of the most costly and complex dental procedures done by emergency dental professionals are root canals and dental implants. Both of these require lots of time in the dentist office and often multiple visits. Crowns are a bit more simple but still require hours of dental work and come with a hefty bill. All these can be avoided in most cases with just a daily brushing routine. Encourage children to get in the habit of brushing twice a day and try to avoid teaching them to fear the dentist, but rather appreciate it and even look forward to visits to get clean report of zero cavities. Good dental care is needed for your overall health.

Tom Brady's Hair: He Likes to Change It Up

Tom Brady's Hair: He Likes to Change It Up

Tom Brady confesses he's into experimenting -- at least when it come to his hair. The handsome quarterback has sported everything from a Bieber cut to a barely there crop to his newly long tresses.

"I just like to change it up," Brady, 34, told Women's Wear Daily Tuesday in Boston. "I don't take it too seriously."

So why was Brady talking hairstyles instead of football plays? The NFL pro was hosting an exclusive grand re-opening party for an Ermenegildo Zegna store, People reports.

He took a moment to poke fun at one of his friends, saying: "Look at this guy, same haircut for eight years. There might be some cute girls out there who’d want to see something different."

So what does his supermodel wife, Gisele Bündchen, think of her husband's penchant for variety? The 31-year-old hot mama told New York Magazine's fashion site The Cut that her hubby looks divine regardless of hairdo.

"[His hair is] his choice," she said. "He can do whatever he wants because I'll love it no matter what. Short, long, red, whatever! It's all good!"

Ultimately, Brady knows fashion is his wife's passion, whereas his is on the football field.

"What I do on the field brings me the most satisfaction," he said. "I'm invested in that every day of my life. Winning is fun."

U.S. returns paintings looted by Nazis to Polish (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A pair of 19th century paintings by Polish Impressionist Julian Falat, looted by the Nazis nearly seven decades ago, were returned to Polish authorities on Thursday in a ceremony in New York.

President Bronislaw Komorowski of Poland accepted the paintings -- "The Hunt" and "Off to the Hunt" -- at Poland's consulate in Manhattan. U.S. officials seized the works of art last year from two New York auction houses.

"The two world wars that we experienced and numerous uprisings ... left Poland's national heritage really impoverished," said Bogdan Zdrojewski, Poland's culture minister. "That is why every object that returns to our country has huge value that is both spiritual and emotional."

In August 1944, German S.S. commander Benne Von Arent confiscated the most valuable items from Poland's National Museum, including the two paintings returned on Thursday. Many of the looted pieces remain missing.

U.S. officials seized the Falat paintings after Poland's government learned in 2006 the works were being offered for sale by two auction houses.

"No one can ever provide just compensation to the victims of the Nazis' atrocities, but it is very gratifying for our office to play a role in returning the art that they looted during World War Two to its rightful owners," said Sharon Levin, chief of the asset forfeiture unit for the federal prosecutor's office.

Falat, who was born in 1853 and died in 1929, is well known for his hunting and landscape paintings.

(AP Photo/M. Spencer Green)

(AP) ? The software testers at Aspiritech are a collection of characters. Katie Levin talks nonstop. Brian Tozzo hates driving. Jamie Specht is bothered by bright lights, vacuum cleaners and the feel of carpeting against her skin. Rider Hallenstein draws cartoons of himself as a DeLorean sports car. Rick Alexander finds it unnerving to sit near other people.

This is the unusual workforce of a U.S. startup that specializes in finding software bugs by harnessing the talents of young adults with autism.

Traits that make great software testers ? intense focus, comfort with repetition, memory for detail ? also happen to be characteristics of autism. People with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism, have normal to high intelligence and often are highly skilled with computers.

Aspiritech, a nonprofit in Highland Park, Ill., nurtures these skills while forgiving the quirks that can make adults with autism unemployable: social awkwardness, poor eye contact, being easily overwhelmed. The company's name plays on the words "Asperger's," ''spirit" and "technology."

Clients, nine companies in Aspiritech's first two years, have been pleased.

"They exceeded my expectations," said Dan Tedesco of Shelton, Conn.-based HandHold Adaptive, which took a chance on Aspiritech to test an iPhone application. "There is a pride in their product you don't usually see in this type of work."

Aspiritech was founded by Moshe and Brenda Weitzberg after their son, Oran, now 32, was fired from a job bagging groceries. Oran was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome when he was 14. He now works at Aspiritech.

"He went from failing at bagging groceries to being one of the best software testers on our team," said Brenda Weitzberg.

The Weitzbergs modeled Aspiritech on a successful Danish company called Specialisterne, or "the Specialists." Specialisterne also employs software testers with autism. Its satisfied clients include Oracle and Microsoft.

Other companies in Belgium, Japan and Israel are either hiring or training adults with autism as software testers.

This year, Aspiritech projects $120,000 in revenue, with 60 percent coming from donations and 40 percent from clients. The Weitzbergs hope to raise the client revenue to 50 percent next year.

"There have been a couple of attempts in the U.S. and Aspiritech is the one that's making it," said Scott Standifer of the University of Missouri's Disability Policy and Studies office and the organizer of a national conference on adults with autism and employment.

The exact unemployment rate for adults with autism is unknown, but it's thought to be high, Standifer said.

"We don't know how many adults have autism and, because of that, we don't know their rate of unemployment," he said. "We do know from tracking adults just emerging from high school that they are having great difficulty finding jobs."

A 2009 U.S. Department of Education survey found the employment rate for young adults with autism was on par with that for deaf-and-blind young adults, and well below the rate of those with blindness alone or learning disabilities or traumatic brain injuries, Standifer said.

Since Asperger's syndrome didn't become a standard diagnosis until the early 1990s, many of Aspiritech's software testers were adults when they first learned they were on the autism spectrum. They are pioneers, the first generation of adults with Asperger's.

Katie Levin, 35, was diagnosed in her late 20s with Asperger's. As a child, she'd been labeled as mentally ill.

"Asperger's is not a mental illness," she said. "I definitely feel like I identify with the Asperger's community more than I did with the mental illness community." She tests software and runs Aspiritech's Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Rick Alexander, 24, another tester, has a degree in computer science from the Illinois Institute of Technology and completed an internship developing software for the city of Chicago.

"I have a lot of social anxiety. I don't like meeting new people," said Alexander, who was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome as a teenager. Like many of the other testers, he lives with his parents.

He'd rather be a software developer than a tester, he said. But selling himself in a job interview is "very difficult for me."

"When you're a child, the school is very concerned with you, the state is very concerned with you," Alexander said. Organizations help adults with autism, he said, but "you need to approach them and for somebody with Asperger's syndrome, it's very difficult to do the approaching."

Most research dollars have gone toward studying children with autism while adults have been neglected, said Molly Losh, an autism researcher at Northwestern University.

"Our vocational structure really isn't suited to funnel people with autism into the workforce," Losh said. Aspiritech "is a magnificent and innovative venture," she said.

Many businesses hire offshore companies to test software. Mike Mestemaker, director of engineering for Schaumburg, Ill.-based ISI Telemanagement Solutions, chose Aspiritech because it offered competitive rates but was based in the United States.

"They dove right in and worked very quickly," Mestemaker said. "They were very detail-oriented people. They really got the job done."

ISI was happy with the work and has hired Aspiritech for a second project, he said.

Aspiritech provides meaningful work (pay is $12 to $15 an hour) in a relaxed environment where bosses never yell if you're late and nobody minds if you need to be alone for a while. What's more, the company is building social skills. The software testers, who are in their 20s and 30s, are trained to work together and they take part in organized outings: miniature golf, bowling, eating at a restaurant.

"We want to improve social skills among people who tend to be socially isolated," said Marc Lazar, Aspiritech's autism specialist. For many of them, software testing is not going to be their lifelong career, Lazar said, "but while they're here they're going to improve their job skills and they're going to learn what kind of behavior is expected on the job and they're going to have more to put on their resumes."

September is often a loser for investors

By Allison Linn

The stock market plunge Thursday is no fun for investors, and also perhaps not that surprising given the fact that it is September.

According to the Stock Trader?s Almanac, September is often the biggest percentage loser for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ.

There are lots of factors that make September such a down month. Traders often come back from August vacations and want to?shake up?their portfolios, while other more technical factors can also upset trading.

This year, of course, we also have that pesky fear that we?re heading back into recession.

The Dow ended Thursday down about 390 points, after at one point flirting with a loss of around 500 points.

Of course, few people have forgotten September of 2008, when the financial crisis roiled markets.

That?s actually not the worst September in recent memory. According to the Stock Trader?s Almanac, the Dow was down 12.4 percent in September of 2002.
