Brandon Matthews withstood temperatures under 50 degrees and gusting winds last weekend to win the junior-senior division of the Winternational Junior Series held on Pinehurst Resort?s No. 6 Course.
Matthews, a high school senior from Dupont, Pa., shot 73-76 ?149 to claim a four-stroke win over runner-up Micah Alexander of Durham.
Mitchell Ellis of Greensboro was third at 157, with Nick Dorton of Anderson, S.C., fourth. Edmond Brooks of Sanford was fifth with 159, and Trey Sweeting of Pinehurst was ninth with 179.
Eric Edwards, a 10th-grader from Salisbury, shot 75-75?150 to win the freshman-sophomore division. Harcourt Settle of Raleigh shot 163, and Bishop Saunders of Pittsboro shot 164 to finish second and third, respectively.
Jonathan Davis of Advance was fourth with 166, and Austin Harrell of Hickory finished fifth with 167.
Reggie Crews of Jacksonville retains the lead in the boys? junior-senior points race with 235. Alexander is second with 222.5, and Ellis is third with 205. Sweeting stands sixth with 122.
Alex Smalley of Wake Forest tops the freshman-sophomore division race with 180 points. Settle is second with 130, and Davis is fourth with 120. Griffin Cryan is 24th with 36 points.
Gabrielle Weiss of Pinehurst and Mary Barbero of Fairfax Station, Va., lead the girls? division with 100 points each. Hailey Crider of Pinehurst and Camilla Vik of Greenwich, Conn., are tied for third with 80.
The third event in the series is being played this weekend on Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 1.

Tilghman Jr: Michael Hocker II of Chapel Hill and McKenzie Talbert of North Augusta, S.C., were winners in the 22nd annual Charles Tilghman Junior Championship played at the Surf Club in North Myrtle Beach.
Hocker opened with a solid 72, then put together one of the best rounds ever by a junior golfer on the course. he posted six birdies en route to a 66 for a 138 total that was two strokes better than runner-up Austin Landale of Townville, S.C., who shot 70-70?140.
The 66, which featured three consecutive birdies on holes 9, 10 and 11, is Hocker?s career best and gave him the overall title as well as the boys? 17-18 division.
Benjamin Griffin of Chapel Hill won the boys? 15-16 division with 71-72?143. There was a tie for second between Jonathan Hardee of Greer, S.C., and Noah Edmondson of Davidson at 147.
The 16-year-old Talbert won her third straight Tilghman Championship in the overall girls? division, lapping the field by nine shots. Talbert had five birdies in her final round score of 71 for 141.
Talbert is the second girl to win three straight Tilghman Juniors, matching Shauna Estes, who won her third in 1993.
Finishing second in the girls? 16-18 division was Louise Oxner of Greenville, S.C., who finished with 150. Oxner is a past champion of the overall girls? event in 2008. Coming in third was Tara Simmons of Goldsboro with 152.
Lauren Stephenson of Lexington, S.C., took the girls? 13-15 division with 151. Madison Moosa of Charlotte was second with 155, while Nicole Chin of Irmo, S.C., was third with157.
The boys? 13-14 division ended in a tie as Kohler Karavan of Myrtle Beach and Walker Cress of Concord finished at 148. Third went to Jennings Huntley of Columbia, S.C., who shot 154.
Griffin Cryan of Pinehurst shot 79-76? 155 to tie for fourth. Anderson Allgeyer of Pinehurst was sixth with 81-77?158.
Tin Whistles: The team of Gene Denneberg, Peyton Cook, Ray Fletcher and Sam Sayers posted a score of 114 in the Tin Whistles 1-2-3 tournament held on the Pinehurst No. 5 Course and won the event by 12 strokes.
Second place went to the foursome of Jeff Harmon, Peter Hill, Mike Strasser and Don Akers with 126.
Joe Koontz, Jay Clatworthy, Jan Ludwig and Murray Williamson shot 128 to finish third.
