If you?ve been following the site for a while, you?ll know that I?m a British Airways fanboy ? I?ve only ever flown BA to London from Chicago and that?s the way I intend to keep it. Some people may have had different experiences with them ? but I?ve always had a good experience and there?s no better way to prepare for footfall in Britain than to enter Britain on the flight.
My trip to the Royal Wedding was my 8th trip to Britain and my 8th with British Airways. I booked my tickets in World Traveler ? also known as economy. It was a business trip on a budget and booking my tickets coincided with a sale BA had which allowed me to snap up a ticket for $880 ? not a bad deal for what was essentially a last minute trip during a peak time.
Happy with the deal, I waited to few weeks until my trip in anticipation.
The week before my trip, British Airways sent me an e-mail with my trip details and offered me an upgrade to World Traveler Plus for $116. I jumped on the deal! I generally have no problem traveling economy ? it suits my spendthrift nature. But I?ve flown World Traveler Plus and it?s very worth an extra $116 ? especially as it usually costs a lot more to buy a WT plus ticket.
Once the waiting at the gate was finished and I boarded my flight ? I was surprised to see that almost everything on the place was brand new. I overheard a stewardess say that in fact the plane was their newest in the flee t- everything was brand new. This meant new seats, new on demand system, everything. It even had that new car smell.
The first big change in World Traveler Plus was that the seats were wider and roomier. I booked a bulkhead seat in front of the exit so I had plenty of legroom. The seats had plugs in them to charge computer but also ? very cool ? they had USB ports for charging iPods or iPhones. This helped me keep a full battery for when I landed in London.
The new On Demand system was great ? you can watch whatever you want when you want and there?s many many options of things to choose from. You can watch movies, TV shows (Britain?s finest too), radio and you can also play games.
I really enjoyed the new WT Plus cabin ? I had a nice relaxing flight over to London and managed to get a bit of sleep as well. My only complaint it that British Airways hasn?t yet put Wireless Internet in their cabins.
When we arrived in London ? despite there being a beautiful new Terminal (T5) ? we were deplaned on the tarmac and bussed to the terminal. I really hate it when they do this. However, that should have been stopped by now as they finally opened a 3rd satellite terminal for BA planes to use (they were putting the finishing touches on it when we arrived).
The day before my flight home, I was again sent an email from BA that offered me a $116 upgrade for the flight home ? having enjoyed the flight over so much, I sprang for the upgrade again. The problem though was that all the best seats had been taken, so I had to choose a inside seat.
I?ve written about Terminal 5 before ? it?s a beautiful building and I love spending time there. You don?t really need access to the lounge when there?s so many restaurants in shops within the terminal.
For boarding, we were bussed to the tarmac, the same as we?d arrived, which was even less pleasant than before because of all the souvenirs I was carrying. I was a little surprised when they bussed us to the exact same plane that I?d arrived on. I was very happy about that ? meant I still got to experience everything all new.
The flight home was pleasant enough. It went by quickly thanks to all the entertainment options. I enjoyed chatting with the person sitting next to me. My only complaint is that the new seats make it very difficult for people in inside seats to get out on their own. You basically have to ask the person to get up to let you out. I usually just waited until he got up to make bathroom trips to avoid awkwardness.
If you book WT Plus ? my advice is try to always secure an aisle seat or exit row seat ? or have a loved one take the outside seat so that you don?t get caught short.
All in all, I really enjoyed my flight experience with British Airways to the Royal Wedding and will be more than happy to fly them again on our next trip over in October.
